|
|
Question for the hive mind.
I have been tracking and driving my little 924 for 8 years now. Aside from minor things the car has been a tank. Lots of fun, handles excellently and it always tends to draw a crowd.
Last week while getting the 944 finished up I noted the tire pressures for the 944 were listed at 29/36 front/back and this got me thinking about what I should be running on the 924.
The car is currently shod with 205/50/15 Dunlop Direzza's and I tend to run 32/30 front/back because there is more weight on the front. Am I wrong, or should I try the 944 pressures and see what happens?
Thanks _________________ Cheers;

Oem pressure isnt that interesting for track cars with track tyres. When i ran 205/50 r15 r compounds i found about 29psi/2bar hot pressure front and rear worked pretty well. But it depends on the tyre of course. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Could that tire pressure setup have been to correct understeer of staggered tire sized f/r of a 944? _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Mike, is the 32/30 hot or cold pressures?
Advice given to me about my R tyres was they should be circa 22 to 26 cold and not exceed 30 when hot on track. Most tend to set them equal as our cars a very balanced.
Road tyre pressures are completely different to track uses and R tyres. I don't run over 30 on road or R tyres on the road. But the 944 is a touch heavier than a 924. But still on track the 944 guys don't go over 30.
It depends on road whether you want the perfect blend of rolling resistance/gas mile, tyre wear and grip performance. Not all are aligned with one pressure. Its a compromise with manufacturers pressures ultimately trying to get the best gas mile and wear, not so much grip. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

If I remember correctly, I used to run 28 all around on this car with same tire size and type. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Carrera: the 32/30 is cold street pressure.
Tires that I am currently running are Dunlop Direzza's DZ102s. After a nut and bolt check last night everything is tight and ready to go. Tire Pressures are sitting around 30psi all around.
I will run the car like this for the lapping night. When I get some photos and video I will post up here. Should be a good time. _________________ Cheers;

Run them at 30 and see how you go. After some laps and you feel the tyre go a little greasy come in and check pressures asap. Could be up around 36-38 hot if running quickly and this could be too high for fast lapping. You will feel the grip fading away as the pressures go up and the road rubber gets too soft. I would let air out to be back at 30 hot. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

So the car is all set for todays open lapping session at the 21 turn Calabogie Motorsports Park, here outside of Ottawa Canada. I have an extra set of brake pads coming, just to be safe, oil is good, tire pressures are set to 29psi and everything is working like it should.
Cannot wait to drive. _________________ Cheers;

How did the drive go, Mike? No need for the extra brake pads, I hope. |

Dunlop Direzza is that the street or r-compound tire?
Setting the pressure at home, that is only good for the transport to the track. On the track you need to adjust accordingly.
If its the r-compound tire aim to keep the pressure 29-32 as a basis, if its the street tire try doing the same IF it has stiff sidewalls to cope with track driving otherwise 36-40 ish to not damage them. |

The Direzza is s a 200 tread wear street tire. They are old. I had a lot of push while running them a couple weeks ago. They may be dead. That said Pressures started at 29 all around and they performed adequately.
Biggest problem I had was my line and the battery not staying in one place. So it ended up being a troubleshooting night.

I would love to, but my efforts have been going towards getting my 944 running and driving this summer. I think the days of the 924 being tossed around the track are numbered.
It will be getting a mechanical and physical refresh in the near future. It deserves it after the 7 years I have owned. It. _________________ Cheers;
