|
|
I'm restoring a -79 931 back to original.
Right now I'm cleaning/repairing the under body coating. Does anyone know how the under body was painted from factory? Not at all, body colour, partial/over spray ?
Under the black goo that was applied to my car by the importer the under coating looks beige with hints of body colour silver. |

From what I understand, starting with the 1979 model year, these cars were galvanized at the factory.
I would imagine this was done with some sort of industrial electroplating bath on the whole chassis. I am not sure how you would go about re-galvanizing the chassis yourself. |

Yes, but was it painted and to what extent?
For example, was the entire floor pan painted in the body colour or was there maybe just some over spray near the sills and in the wheel wells from when the body was painted. |

I can take some pictures of my MY 1980 931. It is definitely galvanised and there seems to be paint in the wheel wells, but I never looked too closely. I know my paint is original, and its a two tone car.
You are looking at the underside of the body and not inside under the carpets, right? |

Yes the under side of the body. Nerdy!
This is the front wheel well after some cleaning. Sort of body coloured, but not exactly, could be tainted from the tectyl goo that was applied to the car.

Never mind the rust cut outs, they are replaced with solid metal.
The underbody is now dirty and under the dirt there is the Tectyl crap (which you can rub away with solvants) and under that the white/grayish rubber coating that might have been painted.

The current state doesn't fly... for this cars end result.
I have broken down most parts under the car and had them refinished.

Yes, some parts doesn't have the correct finish but I won't redo them.
BTW, why doesn't the IMG-tag work for me, I just get a link? |
