I realize this is a rather strange question, but with 2 cars(4 speed) both the shifter knobs are loose. How does the shift knob typically to round barrel of the shift lever?

I'll leave it to you to double check the part numbers, but it looks like 924 PET for 1979 shows the same shift lever and rubber dampeners as the 944. I would get the only944 shiftlever
https://www.only944.com/partscatalog/only/shifter/

and those rubber dampeners are very soft so get these 3d printed ones to match the only944 lever.

also consider getting the shuift linkage arm for the transaxle

and the short shift kit

On the track car I just fastened it on with a round head screw. For some strange reason the shift lever pin and shaft aren't worn badly, maybe because the car sat for 20 years before I got it. I have a '78 with the 4 speed. The cross transmission shift bar fits well, I put it on when the tranny was out for the fuel cell installation. Unfortunately the short shift kit does not fit the 4 speed.
