Hey Folks,
With lots 'o help and advice and countless searches on this board, I've done a mechanical refresh on an '81 924T. This included every mechanical system including an engine rebuild, turbo refresh, brakes, cooling and on and on. Oh boy. The engine rebuild was not planned but found a leaky cylinder. Then I had to wait for parts. Anyway, I started it months ago and planned to have it finished in time to join the Hagerty Amelia or Bust tour from Michigan to the Amelia Island Concours. Eight days ago, I got the block and head from the machine shop. It's been a wild rumpus since.
The tour has started and I planned to meet them tomorrow, March 4, in Galax, Virginia. I've driven my 924 a total of 60 miles. A wise and thoughtful person would not take their untested car to Florida. I am not wise. Fudge it, I'm taking my new toy.
Vaughn, the 924 sensei, suggested posting the itinerary here. This struck me as a good idea. Below are the basics until I get the specific hotel info. There will be a bunch of car folks at these places so come on by and say hello. These are the towns will arrive at on the evening of these dates.
March 4, Galax Virginia
March 5, Maggie Valley, NC
March 6 Lake Oconee, GA
March 7 Amelia Island, FL
And then of course, March 8 is the Porsche Werks reunion at Amelia.

So please say a prayer for this fool. And if you live near these towns and might be able to lend a garage or hold a flashlight in case of trouble, please send me your contact info.
More to come,
Thanks for listening,
Larry

Not sure how to post pictures, so here's an album

BTW, you'll notice a shot of the rear main seal. I installed the engine and then remembered I had not installed the seal. Yes, yes I really did that... |

It's not super far from my house. I'd like to come see the car if I could. |

Heard from Larry last night, made it to VA safe and sound if a little chilly - not much heat, no surprise! Sounds like most everything's working in that regard, so... yeah. State of 931 in single-digit temps (as we have currently up here in MI)... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yes! Making progress. 250 miles around the Blue Ridge yesterday. The only issue was the exhaust bolts to the turbo came loose. While I had the metal acorn nuts on initially, I change them to make removing the exhaust easier (I had to do a few times to sort the waste gate). Car is running well.
Off to Lake Oconee today. And then Amelia Island Thursday. |

Great!! That sounds like a heck of a journey. Will pictures of the trip make it to the same album?
Safe travels! |

Love it!
I am in Bishop, GA which is in Oconee County right off 441. Should be on your way, maybe.
Let me know, love to see the car. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |
