I have just purchased another 924 which I believe is a 1978 model according to its chassis number which is 9248103078,,,, the car has the usual K jetronic system and is not starting. What should I look for first before deciding to scrap the Bosch system and fit carbs?

many things

see if there is fresh fuel in the tank, see if injectors spray, see if spark plugs produce spark, see if engine timing is right, check if spark timing is on point, check engine for compression.

Almost certainly points ignition not electronic, check that first, points will oxidise if left standing.

Problem solved,, had the distributor cap turned and points not set properly,, while 2 spark plug leads were misplaced... most probably the previous owner did not know exactly what he was doing...car spluttered at first but runs now.. needs some miles on it though to get rid of some carbon/oil or whatever that is coming from the exhausts...

There might be a lot of gasoline in your oil caused by unsuccessful start attempts. If so, change your oil and filter.
