Hey guys, hoping someone here can help me out.
I took the motor of my 77 924 apart a while ago and now that I have rebuilt and reinstalled the motor, I can't seem to find the dipstick. Oops!
I can't find any replacements let alone photos of the correct one online. Even the official parts catalog PDF shows a picture of the correct dipstick in the photo of the assembled engine, but in the parts list in the lubrication section shows the incorrect dipstick and the corresponding part number.
To clarify, my dipstick is a solid almost straight stick with an o-ring or seal where it meets the oil pan. The parts list and photo shows a dipstick tube, which my motor does not have. Everything else I see online shows this tube setup, which I assume is the setup for later models.
Does anybody have any advice? I found the measurements on this forum but I would like to find an original replacement. Thanks in advance. _________________ early 77 924 na |

…there used to be photo’s included but these went lost.
Could be floating around on an old HD in my library:
…Maybe some one else can share it?
Google image search dipstick812010.jpg and you’ll get an idea.

Kind regards,
Harm.
Edit01.
This is the later style dipstick if I'm not mistaken.
The '77 will have the same dipstick-end, minus the tube
so only difference is the height, being 210mm till stopper.

To twist the topic just a little. On my '77 with no extension tube for the dipstick. After a track day in October I had oil all over the engine compartment from the dipstick. This does not happen at all with street driving.
Any suggestions? I know it sounds dumb, but something as simple as a bungee cord might help. _________________ Mike

Actually your idea is not dumb at all. Under racing conditions an engine can create more pressure and windage in the crankcase especially if it is "wet sump" and relying on stock "breathing" to the atmosphere. I used to use a throttle return spring to hold the dipsticks in place on many race engines that used them...the "KISS" method of under-engineering ! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"
