The shifter knob on my 87 924s is pretty worn, I was wondering if I could put a screw on knob there instead but the threads for the after market ones are much thinner than the wide shifter on my car. Is there are adapter that I can put there to make aftermarket knobs fit?

RancidLatte,

I had the same situation going on (along with worn bushings but that is another story). I ended up removing the shiftier, shortening it by 1.5" and welding a 1.25" section of of m12x1.5 threads cut from a grade 8.8 bolt. I chose m12x1.5 as that matched the knob I wanted to use (intended for a VW), your selection my vary. I will say this though: This mounting configuration does transmit way more vibrations and drive line noise than the OEM style slip on knob.

When you say the threads on the aftermarket shifters are narrower, do you mean the round piece that the rubber cap slides over? That part can actually be removed. But the lever underneath is still a proprietary Porsche style, and also won't accept most aftermarket knobs.

I have a Function First knob, it looks and feels nice and was designed for Porsche shifters. I had the screws back out on me pretty quickly (I've got some worn torque tube bearings so there's a bit of vibration). I've since used blue loctite on it and it's been fine.

928 Motorsports sells an adapter to allow you to use a generic shift knob. No personal experience with it, but it looks like a less hardcore (and probably way more vibrate-y) version of Sunset924's solution.
