Can I presume this is to do the clutch?
I've just finished this job and did it by removing the gearbox (5 speed), slide the torque tube back then remove the bell housing. In my opinion if you have an engine lift I suspect lifting the engine maybe easier\faster as access woudl be far better but then I did the job lying under the car and maybe with a 4 pillar lift would have a different opinion? _________________ 1982 924 2.0 Lux

My options are lying under the car under 4 jack stands or lifting out the engine. |

Unless you have another reason to pull the engine, just slide the torque tube/tranny back and remove the bell housing. Haynes has an OK write up. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

getting the engine out means removing the Rad
Just having done the engine removal procedure, I believe removing the tranny might be easier _________________ 1979 924 NA |

How much of a pain is pulling the shifter to slide it back? |

Mine was rattling\knocking when not in gear & at biting point which all sounded like it was coming from the back of the car. When I removed the inspection cover by the gearbox and grabbed the torque tube coupler I could rotate it by 100+ degrees.
After pulling the clutch it was clear the centre springs were really weak and the tabs in the middle off the clutch were banging against each outher - the release bearing was filthy but fine.
It was however the original clutch with a manufacturing date of July 1981 and the wear was quite low so backs up the 78k on the car.
I did the job with the car on axle stands\jacks and it was ok. More a write up here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1006375
