I am replacing the front pads on my '80 NA 5 lug and I have an extra part it seems. I have purchased the brake hardware kit which includes the cross shaped piece that goes on top of the pads, two new pins and two small hairpins as pin retainers. There is also a thin spring, vaguely mustache shaped, that is not installed on the pads I removed.
The pad set I removed does not have the "hairpin" style pin retainers but has a single spring that goes through both pins. And there-is no "mustache" shaped spring retainer. The Porsche parts catalog shows the retainer in question but is not clear as to exactly how it would be installed.
Some advice here would be most appreciated.

I've been using the "moustache" style clip - each end picks up the holes in the pins, and then the center section clips in place over the bridge of the caliper, real nice...

But if the "mustache" wire clip is the pin retainer, why are small "hair pin" clips supplied? The Porsche parts catalog show both pieces but does not say that there are different applications.
The pictures I have found agree with your idea however.

OK I figured it out, the "mustache" shaped clip goes over the inboard side pad carrier with the two circular ends going over the outside ends of the pins. It will fit between the carrier and the "hairpin" style clip that goes in the hole in the end of the pin. This all fits well and goes together with no extra parts.
It must be right. Maybe.

Nah, I don't use the hairpins, just direct the ends of the 'stache into the pin holes.
