Can an Audi box with his torque tube be installed on an 80 turbo originally equipped with a snail shell, without changing the torsion bar carrier?

You can keep the same torsion bar carrier...thats not the problem.
If anything is in the way you can cut the snailshell supports off the torsion bar carrier(it would be a shame tho so take Keno's spare)....the problem is that you cant install the Audi torque tube without removing the torsion bar carrier as it has this big well to mate with the Audi box.

I have all the parts available right now to do the swap, I'm just not convinced that I want to do that much work. One thing for sure, I'm not cutting the snailshel support.
My 1st and 2nd syncro are pretty bad, but I managed so far.

I would much rather find a good snailshel replacement.

I have about 5 spare transaxles. Swing by and grab one. Cost you a beer.

It turns out that there are no synchros available for the snailshell. Some are listed as the right part but don't fit. I had my tranny guy use up my 4 snailshells to make one good one for the '79 racecar

All the synchro rings are available if you know which ones to buy. As for the dog teeth, I don't know if first is still available--it was from California Motorsport (CMS) 2nd and 3rd may be as well but I an not certain.

Sunchro rings: (these are what I have in mine)

1st 915.302.301.06
2nd and 3rd 928.302.301.31
4th and 5th 911.302.301.08

It's the NA snailshell that is the unlucky dog. Parts not available or correct part number available but not the right part for the non turbo snailshell. V8carreragts, ideola and I went through this last year when I was trying to freshen up an NA snailshell for my '79 race car. It took 4 NA snailshells for my trannyguy to get decent synchros, sliders and dog teeth for gears 1 & 2. Gears 3,4, and 5 were good or parts available for the NA snailshell.
