While browsing craigslist I came across this 1987 924S, one owner with non sunroof option. After a brief exchange via text I set out to take a look at the car. Given that I'm in the northeast I expected either a total rust bucket or a nicely maintained car. To my surprise when I arrived I found a slightly worn, original, but maintained car. Its completely rust free. No real factory options aside from the non sunroof which I'm found of. The eats had recently been replaced from a donor but other than a recent service the car is original. Completely worn out suspension and all!

Most recent service within the last 5k miles was a full tune up and TB service.

I have plans to make a nice DE/street car out of it. I have a long list of items needed in the suspension area. Having owned 3 other 944's early and late I'm learning the ins and out of the lighter 924 body and its suspension design.

Some progress so far.

Very Nice! I'd rather have a slightly worn car that needs some work than a perfect show car. The little quirks give me something to tinker with and I don't feel too bad about minor upgrades.

Do you have a date of when the timing belt was changed? I've seen a lot of people say 2 years/30k mile intervals are required. The one on my car only had about 2k miles on it but it was 7 years old or so. Changing the belt out isn't as hard as everyone makes it. I could probably change just the belts (not rollers or pump) in 2-3 hours now that I've done it before. Of course, if you've owned 944s before, you probably already know what you're doing.

Just an observation: It looks like the paint in your battery tray may have seen better days. Before it gets bad, pull the battery, clean up the battery tray, brush with seam sealer, and repaint it. It's much easier to catch a battery tray issue before it becomes a problem than it is to fix it after it rots out and destroys your interior. You can see what a battery tray leak will do to a car if you look at my 924S thread. I would also suggest a battery cover to keep the battery acid from getting washed off the battery terminals onto the metal below. They're about $20 and cheap insurance. I really wish the previous owner of my car had done that.

It looks like you have a very good starting point. It's nice to see that people are still willing to buy a car that's less than perfect and put time and energy into keeping it on the road. It seems that a lot of people pass up great cars because they're afraid of the costs of fixing things that might break. There are horror stories (*cough* clutches *cough*), but in my experience, most things can be fixed in an afternoon if you know how to use a wrench and a screwdriver.

The suspension should be basically the same as a late model 944. Shocks, torsion bars, control arms, bushings, etc. should all interchange as long as you get late model parts.

Thanks Eric.

Yes, the tinkering definitely keeps me occupied. Good tip on the battery.
Its odd some portions of the cowl lost their white paint even on the other side. I'll take some preventative measures.

On my other 2.5's I've always pulled the TB cover and inspected before the interval. Its cheap enough IMO to do every 15K. On the race S2 I had I did the rod bearings seasonally. Cheap insurance. I'll likely have the same service done on this one.
