|
|
Is there anywhere on this site a "How to" replace the radiator fans? Driver's side fan is seized. Suspect bearing.
Thanks! _________________ New first time 1987 924S owner - April 2016

I replaced one of my fans with a generic fan from Amazon. I mounted it in the existing cowling. Had to set polarity so it would pull through the radiator. I have a bad thermo switch on the radiator but was concerned that I'd damage the radiator if I changed it. I learned that if you have AC, if you turn the fan to 1 both fans will run continuously. No separate switch needed.
I can check the specs on the fan I bought if you'd like. Good luck - Peter |

Thanks Peter!
Yes, if you can dig out those Amazon fan specs, I'd be very grateful!
A new gen-u-wine Porsche fan is about $485!

I remembered that it's a 10in fan and I mounted it inside the shroud with some modification to the outside of the fan. Spliced wires into existing connection taking care to have polarity so it pulls air through the radiator. The old fan looks like it was built for a Panzer tank! This is much lighter but seems to put out a good air flow. There were absolutely no directions, but it had a high rating at amazon - and low cost. Good luck - Peter

Thanks again Peter!
I ordered that fan and initially thought it would not fit into the fan shroud, but with some judicial trimming with my Dremel got it to fit. Obviously it doesn't fit where the three nuts hold the original fan, but the cable ties secure it nicely. I had a 50/50 chance with the polarity and got it right the first try! At $25.95 delivered certainly a better deal than the $485 ++ Porsche part!
Haven't yet been out on a long drive, but all appears to work as it should!
Great guidance!

John - Glad that the fan worked for you - I didn't want to go with a smaller fan. Some shade tree mechanic mods puts it in the housing nicely. As I said I run both fans full time by turning the AC on. Good driving - Peter |
