I fired up the 924 to take it for a spin, pulled out of the garage only to fined a huge puddle of gas with a large stream leading out to the car where I saw what looked like Niagara falls coming down from the center under the diff area. Shut it down, cleaned up the mess (leak stopped) and proceeded on in the beetle for the days adventure with the wife after pushing the car back to the garage. Next day I fired it up twice...... no leaks appeared.... what happened???

Is there possibly a hole in the top of the tank and the tank? If there is and the tank was a little overfilled, gas could pool on top of the tank as it sits and pour off the top when you moved it? Just a guess. It's hard to say without seeing where exactly the gas is coming from.

As far as I'm aware, there shouldn't be gas any lines running through the center of the back of the car. The lines run along the passenger side in the back then cross over further up front.

I actually crawled under my 924 today to work on the fuel pump. I was wrong. The fuel lines do run directly over the transaxle... now... why would it leak intermittently? I'm at a loss too.

Look at the accumulator. Mine would leak intermittently from the screw on the bottom, really annoying and made the garage stink. It is in the area you are looking at, near the transaxle on the passenger side.

What the hell is an accumulator? Do I need to replace it, or the screw?
PS thanks guys for your responses, hope we can figure this one out as I'd like to get back in and go but unsure of when it might happen again.

The accumulator is a small cylindrical canister with a spring loaded diaphragm in it. Its purpose is to maintain fuel pressure after shutdown.

If you take the screw out and fuel comes out, it means your diaphragm has a leak. You would need to replace the entire accumulator, not just the screw unfortunately. Note that the accumulator is located towards the right side of the car in front of the fuel pump. Some cars had one 40cc accumulator and some had (2) 20cc accumulators. I'm not sure which year they switched over, but make sure to check both if you have 2.

Ah! Sorry, I missed the little but significant 'S'.

OK, now I"m looking for another idea as to the mystery, so far my inspections have turned up nothing but I'm afraid to use the car now even for a short trip around the block!

Most likely a crack on top of the fuel tank or a leaking rubber fuel vent line that only leaks when the tank is full and pressurized.

Some of us never tighten the gas cap the whole way to avoid pressurizing the tank in hopes of avoiding such cracks in the tank.
