Hi all,

I'm looking at an S1 in allegedly good condition, with the exception of a bad #2 rod bearing. The asking price is pretty cheap (if description of overall car is accurate...still need to verify that) but I'm a little worried about the rod bearing.

I'm not an expert mechanic, but I do all the work on my 928. That being said, I've never pulled and rebuilt a motor. My friend has, and he has a lift, etc, and says it's best to pull the engine, but I see info on doing this job on a 944 through the oil pan. What is the recommended method on here for doing this job? Or is the recommendation "Run away and find a different car?"

Thanks in advance...

Absolutely that'd be pull the motor. Decent chance you'd need to replace the rod too, but for sure the crank, at least to inspect and maybe polish. Which means motor comes out.

Interesting - had a similar failure in my '82 931, turned out to be the head snapped off the stock rod bolt, allowing the gap to open enough to just spin the bearing. Thankfully, I caught it hearing the tick at idle, and while there was a little damage to the crank bearing surface, I have a great crank shop, they welded it back up and re-turned it, fresh bearings, swap out the rod, and she's back in business.

YMMV.

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure I want to dive in to a motor rebuild just yet, so I have to think about this. I'm all for getting into a project car, just not sure I want a project that big!
