Extensive father-son project.
Just did cam and balance belts, balance shaft seals, front main seal, release bearing and other stuff (have to go after oil leak still, suspect oil cooler, wish we did that when the engine was out last week!)
Runs good but has a whine we can't get rid of, suspect belt tension since we don't have the tool we're doing the twist method. Any feedback on this appreciated.
We followed Clark's Garage instruction, played with balance idler roller position and tried loosening/tightening both belts slightly with no discernible effect (although we didn't loosen or tighten dramatically....yet)
We could just button it up and run it for a while although it has about 5 miles on it and several heat cycles and has not changed.

Thanks for the videos! I have an 88 SE, only about 70k miles, and has the same sound that bugs me, but, unfortunately I have not figured it out yet, but have driven it about 1500 miles since I bought it and sound was there. PO had timing belt, pump.etc and AC done around 55. Will let you know if I solve it...

Not near car at the moment but another forum suggested checking tensioner pulleys being sure balance and timing were not swapped, something about the lip keeping the belt off the rear cover. Although he calls them "tensioner idlers" an there's tensioners and idlers but they don't do both!

I will quote him below:

I did this once in my son's car and got the timing belt tensioner idler and the balance belt tension idler backwards.
When the two are swapped by mistake the timing belt rides against the back timing belt cover and whines like crazy.
The two idlers have shoulders on opposite sides. They look so much alike and can be easily installed reverse.

Did you replace the pulleys and belts or just belts? If you replaced pulleys also did you get them for the 924S or the early 944? There is a difference on one of the idlers. Guess how I know this.

Thanks jvandyke and hdrider for the input, really narrows down where to start from the work the PO had done....and good luck with your trouble shooting! I will post when I confirm my problem.

We just did belts and assessed the pulleys, all spun nice but the timing belt idler, i ordered a new one but in the mean time I cleaned it out and repacked it. It's not the culprit as whine persists with it removed. I have taken to ordering all parts for an '83 944 when engine related. Will give a hard look at those tensioners and their shoulders.
We're going after the oil cooler seals when we get back.

This appears to have been our issue. After finding the tensioners were indeed swapped we reversed, re-tensioned (a couple times) and are whine free.
