Looks like not, but if it is i have a spare one in good condition.
Now i'm torn between using the parts i have in hand and getting my car back within a week or paying extra and waiting for another month to get a more efficient turbo.
Wait, why am i torn? _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Finally got the turbo off the car.
You can see the culprit in that picture..its that little bolt there...I found it still in the compressor.
I'd like to mention the fact that it made 0.2bar and worked fine in this condition, no shaft play, just needs a new wheel(and i'll replace the compressor as well), just felt severely down on power. No noises, engine ran flawlessly.
Anybody thinks that I should be worried about all that aluminium powder going into the engine?
Some suggested I take it apart but I'd only do a visual inspection of the valve seats and combustion chamber with a camera and run some seafoam to clean the whole thing.
The origin of that object guess contest is open....winner gets a beer.

wow, what a spectacular turbo failure, i rarely see such controlled grinding wheel failures, its often far worse with large broken bits and stuff, this looks like its made with a lathe
If you are very lucky your engine could have survived, alu is very soft. I would also drain the oil and change filter if any alu particles when down the crank case, also remove and flush the intake, i hope the turbine wheels is ok, have you checked it? Normally when you have an IC a turbo failure rarely damages the engine, at work we just flush or change the IC and turbo and then get on it again, but you never know. in your case the engine has eaten way more. I hope you get it running soon! _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Oh man that looks horrible. It pains me to see that trail of shit running into the throttle body....
My guess for what caused it - screwdriver ?

Spectacular indeed..that's why I posted it.
The object that caused this is in the first picture...I found the object still in the compressor.
Its the seal/plug that was in the mixture adjustment hole...it fell into the CIS box and down the turbo.
Engine runs smooth...I doubt there is any damage to the engine.
At worst the Al powder has deposited on the valve seats and valve stems.
If it got into the combustion chamber it was burned and/or spewed out.
Turbine wheel looks perfect, no dents no corrosion no deposits, no play in the turbo shaft.
I will change the oil and filter, properly clean the intake, strap on the good wheel and compressor, balance them and put everything back.
I've been asked to take the whole engine apart but I wont do that...no point. Fine Aluminum powder cant hurt the iron engine in any way...maybe plugged oil holes but i'll have it flushed and cleaned before I run the engine again. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Dorment, cryogenic sleep dinosaurs...where are you?
You should get out and drive those 924s more often(and post here)...they give you an amazing kick if driven on the proper roads in the proper conditions.
Drove my red 924 today...I must say...for a car made from other models parts I quite like it
Race car stiff, but not crazy unconfortable, similar to modern 911s I've been in.
Super responsive pedal in the morning cool air...that hybrid turbo...I tell you...its what you want...+ ridiculous amounts of advance from the GT DITC.
Atmospheric blow off makes me every time I hear it.
Great brakes, 951 M030 is really amazing.
Here is the recipe for anyone that wants a good time:
-a 924
-2L S2 engine with some port matching
-super cold plugs, W2CS from Bosch
-#6 k26 turbine mated with K27 compressor(part numbers below)
-capable intercooler
-atmospheric blow off
-GT DITC or programmable ignition
-good working order S2 CIS is borderline sufficient but EFI is much better
-wide band sensor
-3 way boost controller to push 1bar or more
-polyurethane bushings and fresh shocks
-944 turbo M030 brakes
-17" wheels, yes you need them
-225/45/17 premium sticky tires for all 4 corners, yes you need them
-968 front sway bar, rear sway bar can stay factory
-280rate front springs, 200rate rear coilovers
-lower to preferred height, but do not exaggerate, have fresh suspension connections and bearings
-944 S2 or 944 turbo gearbox
-Motul 300V Competition engine oil, ATE brake fluid
-sport seats of any kind, you need lateral support
turbine housing p/n: 5326 101 6365
compressor p/n: 5327 101 5091
compressor wheel p/n: 5327-123-2308
Backplate / Sealplate p/n: 5327-151-6701
Dial it in properly and it will drive like nothing else. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Very nice, thank you for sharing you recipe, I would add the following:
-GT/GTS body kit for a wider stand and an awesome look
-weight lost program
-911 pressure plate, higher clamping force and lighter
Question for you, why the S2 engine vs the S1?
I understand that the S2 higher compression ratio makes it easier/better on the road trough traffic, but I would think that the S1 would make a better/safer platform for higher boost level. That's what Porsche did with the factory GTS and GTR, lower the compression ration and raise the boost. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Its not a recipe for any kind of ultimate machine or whatever...its just a recipe that I found holds together(I have not exaggerated with abuse though) and gives a very enjoyable experience.
For a road going car the S2's higher compression is in my opinion a tiny bit more desirable. Its clearly a few more factors for off boost response...but a bit higher compression and loads of spark advance before a big turbo spools up is a nice thing to have on a street car. It will skip past the off boost hanging around time of the S1 a bit quicker I say.
The recipe is for the feel and performance of the car, the looks is up to each. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

I don't know if what I have planned is exciting, but I will be installing a new coil and plugs this weekend. Then I am going to attempt setting the timing and idling on the 931 and lastly I am going to attempt setting the CO.
I say attempt, because even after more than a year of ownership and lots of reading I still do not fully comprehend the precedure for dialing in a S2 931. I have done this everytime I have solved an issue or improved something on the engine. But still, it feels like it is a dark art.
One day this car will idle as good as it runs.
I'll keep you posted. |

Had my first trackday after 3,5 years on circuit Zandvoort. Car is way faster then before! Because the engine needs to run in I got the boost on stock 0.65 bar.
Only thing is that I got way slower than 3 years ago so i need to train my driving skils aigain....

I know nothing about spark plug, please educate me.
What is the advantage/disadvantage of running colder plugs?
Thanks _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Advantage - helps keep combustion temperatures lower on over boosted turbo motors. Less heat, less chance of detonation.
Disadvantage - too cold and the plug will foul and cause misfires _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife
