Hey all I've always loved the body style of the 924's and 944's and I'm about to start racing at my local track I've looked threw everything from an mr2 to an mx5 to mustangs but I just found a 1980 931 for sale for 1k says it needs work but I'm willing to put a few thousand into it right when I get it. What I'm wondering is what I should do I don't care how the interior looks I'll probably just gut it and install a roll cage but i do want to open the engine and re compress it to euro specs and run 10psi the bits of research I have done say it's a fun quick car and would be great on a track. Any advice is good advice thanks a bunch. This is the car http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/1980-Porsche-924-Turbo_29644096.lite

Welcome to the board.

Having been through this, I suggest a 1983 944 with manual steering would make a better car for the track at a much lower overall cost.

It is very easy to spend $10k in preparing a 931 to be reliable on the track.

Or find a 924S.

That car appears to be a 931S, wonder if it has an LSD.

If it is a complete mess of a car it can add upp, but if the car starts out pretty decent its not that expensive to make a great track car, no where near 10k, it will be way more fun than a 944 when you are done. But since its a turbo car it do require some more attention to detail, like having good control of fuel system performance, igntion system condition, seals, gaskets and bolts etc, which some are prepared to do and some dont. Its not for everyone, if you just want something to trash around in and dont care so much, a honda is probably a better choice

My 931 track day car have been very reliable, only once have i had a failure on track and it was the bolt holding the boost pipe getting loose. But I have pretty good standard on my mechanical work

Are you planning on racing or track days? What kind of racing? That can make some differences to how much money you would need.

It's going to be a track car / my daily driver but track car first I don't care if I end up stranded somewhere I'm looking at putting 3 grand into it right off the bat I definitly don't want it to be a trasher I plan to do more serious racing but that could be with any car and i know this is the class i want to start at I'm going to look at it later with a few mechanic buddys what should we be looking and listening for.

No clear consensus, but by most accounts, a 1980 (S1) 931 with the M471 option.

For comparison here is one in New York for $1100. https://elmira.craigslist.org/cto/d/porsche-turbo/6208485949.html

It does run with Saab fuel injection.

The one in Canada looks great by comparison.

Thanks, Dan. I'd like to see it in some sales brochures or something. I'll check the PET also, for the decal.
