I know enough to make sure to buy quality parts, and I have a complete Reinz upper engine gasket set I snagged off AutohausAZ on the cheap. My question is about gasket compound/sealer. Should I order a tube to use on my replacement or skip it? The PO obviously skipped it or the head gasket wouldn't have come out without resistance.

EDIT: After more confusing searching, I've come to the conclusion that it should be fitted dry. I know I need to find the correct torque specs, but I want to make absolutely sure I don't have to soak it or use anything special before I get it all back together.

It's a very good idea to send the head in first and check for warpage before assembly. You'll end up doing this job twice if warped.

hdrider, I keep Clark's open on my tablet and with me. It's been a godsend. Paired with the 944 Hayne's manual, I don't think I could fail.
I might hit you up for some parts though. I know of at least 3 things I need.

Grenadiers, I planned on taking it into a local shop. There's too much wrong with this car to assume that it's still flat.

I subscribed to edredas. His videos have been a huge help too.

Also, thanks for linking that video. I was wanting to delete the ultra leaky sunroof on mine but wasn't sure how that would look. The PO apparently felt the need to remove and discard all of the electrical and mechanical parts, the seals are shot and the roof has been dropped several times. I don't see the sense in restoring it to working order if it will cost a kidney and eventually leak in on the interior.

I knew it was a job, but that's a huge undertaking. I may have to redneck it closed for the time being while I sort the other issues out. I aim to have this car running and roadworthy by fall. At least soon enough to get the landlord and the city off my back. Unlicensed derelict blah blah blah...

Color matched racers tape keeps the roof panel from leaking as does RTV silicone.

None of mine have ever leaked....but we don't get as much rain as Portland!

Replace both seals and keep the drains open.
