|
Hello,
I have been offered a complete 1999 audi S4 B5 at a very low price. car runs amazingly well
I have a 931 without an engine.
I am seriously considering installing this
Anyone done it ?
Would it fit ?
I mean, how hard can it be since many install these V8s
Drop a line with your suggestions _________________ Steve

OK, I'll bite.
Hell yes, you should try it, why not? I don't know if anyone has done it, but there is currently an Audi V8 going in a 924, so one would think it would fit. The only space issue which springs to mind is about the intake. . .the S4 has two intercoolers.
*The B5 is a 2.7l 90° V6, cast iron block, aluminum heads, four cam, five valves/cylinder, twin turbo. 265 HP in stock euro trim. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thanks for your reaponse
How hard could it be ?
Would it be connected easily with the transmission tube ? _________________ Steve

If you are good at fabbing or know someone that is that making it fit will be pretty easy. When I was doing my 1.8t I had to make almost everything. I had to get my cousin to help because I can't weld aluminum. I'm not even sure you'd call what I do to steel welding |

I know what you mean.
I have good access to someone who does weld aluminum and he s pretty good at it.
Show us your progress on the 1.8T conversion _________________ Steve

The project has hit several bumps. I had an oil flow issue that resulted in the head and turbo needing replacement. I fixed the issue and I'm a head bolt set away from putting it back together. |

You mention V8 conversions..... most of them are GM smallblock or LS series. I guess the reason why that looks easy, is that you can purchase anything you need to make such a conversion; misc brackets, oil pan, clutch, etc etc. For the Audi V6 biturbo you can purchase nothing....
I have installed a VW straight six engine in my car, and for that conversion, NOTHING can be purchased, I had to fabricate A LOT. Well ok, I had to convert the engine to EFI also.
The only easy thing on that project, was that the engine could bolt right up to the original bell housing and I could keep the original brake booster.
One of the first problems I'm pretty sure you will encounter(besides engine to bellhousing connection), is clearance for the oil pan. I have not seen a good picture of the oil pan on your engine, but I'm pretty sure that you will need to fabricate a new one, since there is NO space between the crankshaft centerline and the cross member. Well, maybe 4 inches, I don't recall the exact distance.
Next issue is the brake booster. A V-engine means that you will have to ditch the original brakebooster (probably not enough space for it) and install something else, maybe BMW hydroboost.
Hood clearance can also be an issue......
You would probably be happier with another gearbox, that has a taller gear ratio.
But when these problems are over, it gets "easier". Now it's on to fabricating/installing engine mounts, exhaust system, accelerator cable, coolant hoses, oil cooler, electrical wiring, fuel lines, the list goes on and on.
My advice; If you have a large garage, a lot of patience, fabricating skills (or a very good friend with fabricating skills), money and time, go for it!
It's a cool project, but if one of the mentioned factors are not present, i'm not sure I would recommend it. _________________ Euro 924, 1976
