Just got my first car. a 1981 porsche 924 base coupe. left it outside for the evening and it got rained on and the sunroof is leaking! it leaks near the rear headliner and i dont know how to take the headliner off to check the drain tubes. any help? the outer seal is going to need fixed or repaired in the future but i want to check the tubes first. _________________ 1981 924 - Alpine White, First car! Welcome!
Its most likely clogged drain tubes. Its a fairly easy fix that does not require the removal of the headliner.
This is a very common problem on these cars.
Process is as such:
-Remove sunroof
- find the four little holes (1 in each corner)
- take weed-eater/trimmer line and run it down each hole
- Use a visible color as you will need to look for it coming out the other
end. for the front two tubes their exit is right behind the hinges for
the hood. For the rear two the exits are behind the rear wheels
pointed towards the transmission.
- If there is a major clog I would spray a little WD40 or something like
that down the suspect tube to help break things up.
- replace the top and you are good to go.

i did that. drains really well now. probably going to do the WD 40 thing to make sure their really clean. how do I remove the rear headliner to fix past water damage? the headliner vinyl is cracked and has a fist sized hole in it from water damage. _________________ 1981 924 - Alpine White, First car! Great, glad they are working!
Taking the headliners out will be a total replacement job. The glue used to put them in is old an will tear them. So I would decide if you want to do a full redo of the headliner or leave it as is.
But, to answer your question:
1) you will need to remove the trim pieces that encompass the surround of the headliner. IIRC there are the two on the A pillars, one right above the windshield, two at the top of the doors, one running along the back of the roof and the two that cover the wheel wells.
- be very careful when removing them. the screws are at weird angles, especially in the A pillar trim pieces and the trim pieces are easily bent.
2) take special care with the two large trim pieces that cover the wheel well as they run all the way up the C pillar and are extremely brittle after 30+ years of being exposed to sun and moisture. I believe that you can remove the one or two screws at the top of these and just gently bend them down. You will not be able to completely remove them as they are tucked under the seal for the quarter windows.
3) once you have the trim removed just pull the headliner off.
4) this should probably come first, find a suitable headliner replacement that you would like to use.
5) cut generally to shape and glue in using a headliner spray glue
6) trim using a razor or the like and glue up any loose edges
7) replace the trim bits nice and careful like and you should be good.
Oh...the front dome light will most likely disintegrate when you pull the front trim piece down, but they are available on Ebay for change.

I have completely stripped two 931 interiors and my 924 NA race car is obviously stripped. I have a bit of experience tearing these things apart. The key is to be careful and take your time. They are old and brittle inside.
