Pretty interesting that this topic came up on the 944 Spec board today.

Apparently a car with this "insert" won the national championship 3 years in a row. It didn't blow up and the car lived for several more years afterwards before someone stuffed it into a wall.

http://944spec.org/944SPEC/forum/race-car-build/21343-which-944-transaxles-are-class-legal?limit=6&start=6#21406

YMMV

I would surmise that running this in a 944 with high quality, synthetic gear oil would do next to nothing, ie, wouldn't break, wouldn't add traction.

Hey Morghen sure did. Just trying to find some good surplus places between you and Praha. Once Christmas is over I will have more time to look into this.

I have a freind who has one of these in his Bugeye Sprite. Autocrosses it regularly, it is competitive for fsstest time of day, beating Miatas, BRZs, MR2s and other old British sports cars. I don't know how well it works, but he has run it for many years and nothing has blown up yet.
