I'm going to try my hand at video blogging this rebuild. First time trying anything like this but thought it might be fun. I will be doing an entire video on removing the engine, so hopefully you guys will enjoy it!
Anyway, these are the first two entries. The first video is just me walking around and trying to get comfortable speaking on camera, and the other is just me cleaning up the car and going into a little more detail.

I just watched your videos. Great first effort! I will be watching for many more I hope. What a difference a little soap and water makes! _________________ 87 924S |

Thanks! Yeah, I put it under a pecan tree to be out of the way and that stuff was a real beast to get off. It looks great now though.
I began pulling the engine this afternoon and I have my go-pro-ish camera setup on a tripod to record the entire process. So there will be plenty more to come! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

I use whitewall tire cleaner to clean everything. It really cuts through grime. My car sat for almost a year under a cedar tree and was covered in a sticky sap. It took it right off. I even clean engine internals with this stuff. Most oil and grease rinse off with a garden hose. Even the carbon on pistons rinsed off after light scrubbing with an old toothbrush. I get it from orielly auto parts $11.00 a gallon. Mix 50/50 with water. That is a cheap cleaner. Not trying to sound like a commercial but this stuff is awesome for cleaning everything. Think it's called whitewall 1000. _________________ 87 924S |

I'll pick some up! I'm always looking for something new to try. I have de-greasers that let me hose sludge right off an engine, but using them on this single stage paint would probably not be a good idea.
This pecan tree mess actually etched into the paint... I have some descent products that can remove just about anything so I wasn't really concerned that it couldn't remove it, but it was some of the toughest stuff I had ever seen. Luckily it came off, but I needed a little patience.
Here's my recording setup. Everything is filmed in real time, but I'll probably speed it up a little into something watchable.
Today I removed the cam tower and was hoping to remove the head, but I have to get ready for the Altanta meet tomorrow. I've found some interesting stuff already with this engine, and may have found why it wasn't driven... but you'll have to wait a while until I finish the video. I don't want to spoil it, and there's no telling what else I'll find.

I pulled the belts and cam tower last Thursday, then I had to pack for Atlanta. I came back with a trunk full of wider wheels for the 924 turbo S that had to be refinished, so I didn't get to pull the head off until yesterday. I've found some pretty interesting things inside this engine so far.
This is my first attempt at making a video like this so its rough around the edges. Hopefully the next video will be smoother since I know what not to do.
So, here's the first part of me breaking down the engine so I can pull it. I can't do this in my shop since I can only work on it about once a week and it would be in the way...
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it!

I thought it was a great video. It looks like mine was put together by the same hack mechanic. I will be watching for more. Great dash cam videos too. _________________ 87 924S |

Thanks! I'm really enjoying doing these videos. I'll try and get this engine out sometime this week. I am a little behind schedule because I'm also furiously trying to catch up on several projects I'm behind on. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Finally finished pulling the engine out yesterday. This was my first time removing an automatic engine so I got to see some new things. It's not really any harder than a manual, just a few more steps.
If you thought the cardboard gasket was bad, wait till you see what was clacking around in the bell housing.
Here's the second half of the video...
