|
|
Well this hasn't been the best of weekends. On top of some currently un-resolvable issues with a couple motorcycle projects, and my phone taking a really bad fall, my 924S developed an engine knock.
After draining the oil, I stuck one of those extendable magnets into the oil pan's drain hole, and pulled out a few metal pieces.
I haven't fully sifted through the oil (which is currently in a couple of perfectly clean plastic shoe boxes), but I'm guessing that my rod bearings are shot.
Not sure what caused it, as the oil level seemed to be within spec, but given that I've had this car maybe one month, who knows.
I'm guessing that I'll be needing to do an engine rebuild unless you guys think something else would work.
An engine rebuild will be the most extensive thing I've taken on, but I've rebuilt a basket case motorcycle so hopefully it's not horribly more difficult. _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

I bought my car as a non-runner. Picked up a running 84 944 parts car for$700. I took apart the 2.5 to fix all the oil leaks and clean everything. They aren't that hard to work on but do require a few special tools. I bought full gasket/seal kit, timing belt set and water pump. I have rebuilt many car engines and the 2.5 is not terrible to work on. BTW this is my first porsche too. _________________ 87 924S |

I believe that if you can work on motorcycles then you should have no problem working on these. They're just regular old four cylinders... _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Very true, though the mass of it makes it more daunting. Removing an engine from a bike is a bit simpler than a car. _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

I have not yet. Had to be out of town (plus work, plus school...) so I haven't touched it.
I plan on working on it this weekend. I'm a bit fearful of putting new oil in and running the car, but I got to do what I got to do... _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

Another board suggested a broken valve spring, since the material is magnetic. Plan is to fill with new oil, run the engine, listen for location, pull plug wires to see if the noise lessens.
I could also send off to have the oil analyzed _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

Have you checked oil pressure? If you have enough damage in the bottom end to cause rod knock oil pressure would be low. _________________ 87 924s
