Well, things were going well until last night when my key broke off in the ignition. I can't pull it out and I think one of the tumbler pins fell out inside the cylinder while trying to dig the fragment out. This is beyond me and I want to take the ignition to a locksmith.
How difficult is it to take the cylinder out? I am able to turn the key t o the on and cranking positions, just not the off position (so I've pulled my battery to keep it from draining/being stolen).

Well, I'm going to attempt to fish out the broken key today with a couple paper clips.
I still would appreciate some insight on the matter though.

It's pretty easy actually, I replaced the plastic bit just last week in mine. You might want to consider buying that part as well since you have to remove the metal portion.

Remove steering wheel horn pad.
Remove steering wheel nut, lefty loosey.
Pull steering wheel off, slight tap on threaded part, with brass hammer, as you pull on wheel, if needed.

Unscrew the two little screws, keep track of them, that hold the plastic shroud in place. Remove upper and lower shrouds, sometimes the upper gets caught on the gauge trim.

Remove the three long, skinny screws that hold the turn signal/wiper stalks together. Watch out for these when re-attaching them, they have a tendency to strip the threads, dumb design.

There are three electrical connections to remove before the stalk comes apart. The high-beam switch on the left, take a look at that before you remove stuff, so you know how to attach again.

Once all the stuff is removed, there is a hex screw underneath the dash to the left, remove that, and the metal ignition should come out.
However, there are two plastic sleeves to remove first.

The 'outer' one is a longer black one, and the inner one is a small clear plastic one. The latter will sometimes come out as you remove the metal ignition. Last week, I had to booger up a steering wheel puller with, yes zip ties to the metal ignition, to get it to budge. The inner spacer is usually pretty fragile, and I've not found a replacement other than a metal one. Which is too long for the application, unless you shorten it. So, be careful out there~! Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'll attempt to fish out the fragment, though I'm not too hopeful since it's still in the "On/Accessory" position (first click from Off), and I don't think I'll be able to get it out from there.

Failing that, I'll do what you did. I've had the steering wheel off before to get at my gauges, so I know the process for that. Here's hoping a locksmith will be able to fix it so that I don't have to get a new ignition and key made (this was my only one).

I'm parting out my '88 924S track car, and my metal ignition switch (which I had to replace, the metal part didn't work any longer) will be available. Probably not going to start till next week some time. I'm nursing a very sore back at the moment.

Yeah, I've been doing that on a regular basis, hasn't helped much~! Just woke up three weeks ago with this pain in the middle of my back. Arghgghgh, getting old ain't fun. Missing Phoenix track days because of it.

I'll take my ignition to a locksmith tomorrow. Since its stuck in the on position, and can't turn it to off, I can't remove the cylinder from the rest of the assembly.
Let me know about that ignition, I'll be interested if the locksmith doesn't work out.

And be careful about your back. My wife got a sore back while running and it kept getting worse, and ended up being a ruptured disc.

Crisis averted!!

I found a locksmith in my city who not only extracted the broken key, but also made me two copies of the key for $25 all said and done.

Now I can resume all the other things I need to do for the 924S, lol
