Sorry about the cable. I would normally double check but I thought it was your original engine. I also could have swore that the cables were interchangeable. I should have checked, I have a car with the early cable and didn't notice until now that the early bracket has a larger hole.

I have a late bracket and that return spring if you can't get that cable to work.

yeah, really you should know what engine is in a guy's car even when he doesn't!

I don't know what is different between the two. We put it on but it seems too long. The one we took off (fire victim) is the same as the one you sent me so the DPO had it "wrong" too.
So am I right that we either need a cable (the kind as you've pictured, with the adjuster at the firewall and a different end at the throttle) to match the early plate, or I need a later plate?
I've asked around when shopping and they seem to be interchangeable, are the brackets the same "length" the arm that holds the cable? There's a lot of slack in the cable between the bracket end and the firewall, the cable has to bend and pinch.
Here's a shot of an '84 944, we have the eliptical cam on the throttle plate.
I'll put up a picture tonight.

I measured the plates and it appears that the later plate is 10mm longer than the early plate. Not sure if that would make a difference but thought I would let you know. You might be able to slit open some washers to go on the cable and fill in that big hole... maybe that might work?

Yeah, that isn't right... being like that might wear the cable out. I think the late bracket would fix it.

I also have a return spring and a six rib crank pulley if you're interested.

I am putting an 84 944 engine in my 87 right now. Throttle cable bracket seems to be the same on both engines.

10mm isn't going to fix my problem, I don't think
I think I installed the engine 3 inches too far back.....
I must have a late bracket as it has the smaller hole.
Maybe i have issues on the pedal end, maybe that is adjusted poorly by PO to compensate somehow? Hmmm
