Any tip for getting the old exhaust sealing ring out of the joint between cat and the muffler? I thought I'd better replace it. Just pry and pound or is there a cute trick to it?

No trick, just needs persuasion.

Hit it with a little PB Blaster, and then with a sharp punch and hammer. The punch will deform the ring and often make it pop out. If not, it will at least bend it enough to get a prying tool under it.

This is essentially what I did, had PB Blaster'd it last night, tapped it with a hammer and drift it popped out. Was a little crumbled, left a ridge behind, cleaned it up.
All back together, off the check list.
Getting closer.
