|
|
Hey everyone,
I'm new here, so take it easy on me. Some friends and I just picked up a 77 Porsche 924 that has been racing in 24 Hours of LeMons.
it's got a 4 speed in it right now and I have the opportunity to pick up a 5 speed from a 944...
Do I need to swap out the torque tube to a 924s?
Any other pointers or things to look out for?
Thanks in advance. This site looks like there's a lot of knowledgable folks on it.
Hope they're kind to noobs. _________________ I'm a 924 newbie...be kind. |

There is some information on swaps both on the technical and FAQ sections of this site. A quick look on my part, not sure if it will answer all of your questions, but it is a start.
I am a relative Newby here too, so I don't have a lot of knowledge about the specific questions. _________________ 88 924S

I have replaced the 4 speed with a 5 speed in my 1976 car. I found an original 924 5 speed (016 model). I had to make a dent in the fuel tank with a hammer, otherwise the gearbox had zero clearance to the fuel tank.
I believe that the 944 gearbox can bolt right up to the 924 torque tube, but the prop shaft diameter on the 924 and 944 are not the same...... _________________ Euro 924, 1976

If you are after performance the 924 5spd is a better choice, the 944 will have similar ratios on 1-4 plus another gear. the 924 is much closer and have 5 gears in almost the same range as the 4 speed. If i remember correctly.. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

You are right on that, Cédric. RPM's in 5th gear (on the 016 5sp 924 box) are not much lower than 4th on the 4sp box. _________________ Euro 924, 1976

But acceleration is much better, I have numbers on it from the track logs if anyone is interested. Helped a friend do the conversion on his n/a and it gave some significant performance on the straight sections of the track. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo
