did some more comparisons, the harness I'm trying to use is labeled "'83" and we're working on an '87 924s.
Differences noted: no black blade connector on "83", different O2 sensor end
Other than that it seems the same so I'll have to either make the "83" into an '87 or look harder for a better match. How hard is it to come by a "better" fit?
the '87 has some diagnostic ports that I don't need to care about, since there's nothing similar on the '83
black "gauge" connector?

Your harness is specific to the 924S. All cars after 1987 with the oil level sensor have the black plug for the gauges, however a 1987 944 harness won't work since it enters the firewall differently. An early harness will fit but as noted, it has red plug with less wires, and non-heated O2 sensor.
You can just mod it to work but you will also have to add wires if you want the oil level sensor work or O2 sensor to be heated. So, you might be better off asking if someone has a 924S harness.
I hope that helps! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

thanks,
I'd like to just get the right harness but if not going to happen, can make one, I need a diagram though, the old harness is burned up enough I can't trace wires and can't find a schematic specific.
I'll start looking for a replacement while looking for good diagrams. _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,

Here's some charts that I made specifically for making custom harness' for these cars. I posted them in your pelican thread, as well.
Basically, you just match the wires up and that's it!
The early connector
The 1987+ black connector
I hope the helps! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

yes, that helps A LOT!
stupid question; what do the terminal numbers refer to?
I just have to figure out where those wires used to end up! _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,

Wires that have terminal numbers connect to the DME, and that's their pin number on the DME plug. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Interesting.
Terminal 21 on the DME plug on mine is green/black (not green) and does go to #4 spot on black connector
Terminal 87 is where then? Goes through harness into 9 pin white block connector and back into cabin, I guess I don't care where it goes, just that it gets hooked back up right.
MPG gauge, terminal 11, black yellow matches up with mine
so the white with yellow strip, oil level goes where? it heads down the sensor branch of the harness and is lost to the fire at that point
The black/white heads down there too but it isn't used so I guess I don't care.
Sorry to be so dense. I really need to get a good wiring guide for this car.
What should I buy that will help me out? Is there something?
is this worth the money?

opps, no you're right, it's been years since I made that... some of those terminal numbers connect to the DME relay under the dash.
So actually, some of those wires run through the fire wall and connect to the plug behind the brake booster. That will connect to the terminals of the DME relay.
Yes, the oil level wire just runs straight to the sender.
I hope that helps, if you have any more questions be sure to ask! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

thanks again,
I could;
A) fix the old burned harness with parts from the "83" which would mean splicing in pretty much everything on the engine bay side, cutting open and soldering about 50 wires then re-wrapping, recreating the oil level wire. Not ideal but would keep me out of trouble for a while!
B) turn the "83" into an "87s" by transplanting the black 8 pin component, which would involve taking apart both harnesses including both DME plugs and adding the '87s bits into it.
I think I'll stall for a bit and try to scrounge an exact match!
I'm learning a lot and when we're done my son and I will know this little Porsche pretty intimately and honestly that's not bad, we won't be afraid to roll up our sleeves and tear into it. I envision him running this car for years as his DD so I'm considering all this investments for the future. _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,
