Very interesting thought. I like this idea, especially considering that the 931 would have significantly more weight on the opposite side of the motor due to the turbocharger assembly.
I've never seen anything bolted to this location, and from the detailed pix, I can't see how a stamped piece of metal spot welded to the top of the mount adds any rigidity. And even if it did, why would more rigidity be required there. I wouldn't think the 931 motor would produce sufficient torque to bend the OEM bracket. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Also interesting since the Turbo has its weight distributed differently but I wonder if something like that would be at the other side since its heavier there
Funny how I saw one pic and thought at first it was to hold a hose
This I know for sure...its there for a reason, some reason
Dan do you have any pics of the factory installing a motor on the production line? Maybe that answers this latest idea _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

remember too the other mount on the other side is a beast. Not sure what was in their heads but by the time the 44 came around everything was light aluminum _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

I had a look last night at the 937 as well as Woody and Dusty, all of which are essentially unmolested in the engine bay. None of them have anything attached to that bolt hole, so I don't think it is for any "operational" use. I think the best conclusion so far is as a lift or support point to facilitate installation on the assembly line. And sorry, I don't have any pix of that! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I sent a message to the boys at Flussig. They have some pretty amazing photos, maybe they have something?! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

never tought my question would lead to a two page discussion, love it!
I will wait for the final answer before I get my engine in the 931

That would be cool if they had some photo's. I did wander off to look at an 80 and then an 82 (molested versions) but each had nothing there.
...and wow does that color pop! _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

It appears to be an engine stand, but the photo is so blurry it's hard to make out if it's using that mounting point or not _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Turbo motor is off balance to the side opposite that mount, maybe they used that point to chain the engine down the assembly line. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Nice job!
To me you guys were right. It has to do with assembly and this was just a jig along the way.
Check out the pile of shifters...the G31 tubes just rolling off the line behind them.... This is a cool pic _________________ 1980 931 since 1989
