Hey folks,

Its been a long time since I've been on here....mostly on the racing side with the ITB racer. Racer is still running strong, made a few more modifications and should have a good season this year. Been over-seas for a spell and have been moving properties (just bought a farm) so I've been a bit busy...then I found this little number on the old C-list.

Purchased her non-running but cranking for under $1k. As you can see from the pix she is missing the turbo hood and has one ignition systems too many....I don't know what the PO was trying to fix by putting an NA ignition system into a turbo and of the wrong year, but the wiring is interesting...luckily nothing has been cut...so its mostly just tracing things down.

She rolled out of the grass nicely and up onto the trailer with my little winch. She has a pretty bad oil leak but motor is getting pulled and torn down. Turbo looks good, going to start getting to the waste gate this week. Fuel dizzy is in good shape, plunger was a little stuck, but some carb cleaner and gentle twisting got her out in a few seconds.

Sorry, a bit all over the place...trying to remember everything I've done...been a few crazy weeks.

As you can see from the original add pics she look a little damp inside. seat are in great shape....but carpets had to get tossed. No rust though and water was coming in from the sun roof (no seal ) ...so enough of me blabbing....here are the pics...

original add pics (color is Havana Brown)

Once in the garage with a little bit of work done...

As you can see there is much work to be done not the least the bit of body work you can see towards the rear....very odd really, no rust, does not go through the panel....I think it was a pitched dent fix...but she'll go to a body shop and get all fixed up the correct way.

Hopefully saved another one from the death that most toofahs suffer these days.

Cheers[/url]

Welcome back Ian! Nice find. That interior is in good shape considering the condition of the rest of the car. I wonder what happened to the turbo hood.

Hey Nick!

Yeah, the interior is in pretty good shape. Still had the tool kit, sun roof bag (in great shape) and the boot cover thing that hooks to the hatch. The car's in pretty good shape all considering. The engine is really pretty good, just oily. Cam looks great and the tapets have no scaring. Plugs all look great, but of course pulling the head will be the only real way to tell.

I'll keep posting pics of progress.

Vaughn,

Wow, I may have to figure a way to get that turbo hood from you I cannot find any around here.

Cheers all!!

Ian,
Welcome back. I had a turbo hood but I think it went to Ideola a couple years ago. Check with him and see if he can part with one if Vaughan can't get his to you.

That hood ended up on the Club Sport because the one that came on it was damaged.

However, I did pick up a spare 931 hood in a parts lot last summer, so I do have one sitting around...

Thanks for all the replies on the hood!

BTR - pm sent

On the diff....sadly, she's an open diff, didn't luck out on that one. Car had almost every other option but that one. I'll throw a pic up later, but she has the green gauges with the 160 mph speedo.

While putsing on her for a bit last night I think someone started getting into the turbo and waste gate. All of the nuts were finger loose on the waste gate down pipe as well as the exhaust to the waste gate and the nuts on the turbo were easily removed....hopefully they felt daunted by the task and left it all alone....we'll see.

Cheers!! More pics this weekend.

Well, to start, here are a few more pics of the car...green gauges with 160 mph speedo and un-dented lip panel:

Now....I have been working on getting the waste gate and exhaust off to continue to prep the engine for uninstall...so some things were lose, primarily the dump pipe from the the waste gate to the exhaust....and here is what I walked out to last night:

Odd I thought, why would i have an oil slick from the middle of the car? I soon found out. The only place that oil could have come from was the waste gate..not looking good for a serviceable WG.

I removed the charge tube line and got a nice little bit of oil out of that too.

Here are the pertinent pics of the WG (hope you have a good stomach, they are pretty gross):

After getting the waste gate out, pretty easy once the exhaust is removed and you have room to work, I started taking her apart...what's the harm, it will have to get refurbed or replaced anyways. Here is the diaphragm...will need replaced:

Here is the WG broken down.

I will get the darn thing to a machine shop, get her all cleaned up, check the valve lapping, leak down and hopefully get a diaphragm and some new seals soon so I can get it all back together (not like this is going to be a rush project though)

Here is where we stand on the engine tear down....slowly but surely. May be able to pull it this week and get started getting into the turbo.

I wiggled on the exhaust side of the turbine and there is some play (tiny amounts)...time to get out the dial gauge, but I am assuming it will need a rebuild...sigh....I was hoping I would get lucky with this car...but, things keep getting curiouser and curiouser, a little Alice in wonderland like, bolts and nuts are lose but things have not been gone through, oil in the waste gate but no oil in the turbo (blown valve seal? I hope its just that)... the wettest interior I have seen in a car in some time, but no rust, weird rust spots on the outside of the car that really make no sense as to why they are there....so I have named the car Alice and graced her with a reminder.

I will probably be moving this thread over to the 931 side as it will be getting a little more technical.

Cheers All!

Ian

Will be a very nice 924 with some work and money thrown at it.
Let us know what you pay for the diaphragm

What is the top layer of your bench? It looks silveryish.

Morghen,
Yeah, hope she turns out nicely. Choked a little when I saw the prices of the diaphragms, but will probably go with this kit:
http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/part/exhaust-wastegate-service-set-911-turbo-930-965/

Kcoyle,
Just overbuilt a large table that's at elbow height for me (easier for me to work since I have a back issue) and picked up some $.99 linoleum tiles from lowes and used flooring glue compound to glue them the bench top....much easier to clean, just spray some carb cleaner and wipe it on down. Also looks nicer than a plywood surface.

Cheers!

I like that idea a lot. I have always used some masonite/hardboard thats cheap and easy to change but it soaks up oil and the like if I don't put down some cardboard first.

Yeah, that wastegate service kit looks good and complete. Reminds me I probably gotta refresh mine, seems to be leaking perhaps...
