hello
I saw that the shaft and the transmission on 924 is very thin and doesnt seem strong for a strong turbo setup.
which audi/VW stronger transmission fit in the 924 ?
Thanks |

If i'm not mistaken Raceboy used the NA gearbox on his 2L turbo that made more power and torque than the standard 924 turbo. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Dutchpug uses 924 NA torque tube and trans on his ~400whp 924 2.0, the engine threw a rod after upping the boost to 2bars but no signs of damage on the torque tube after several years of abuse. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I thought I had read that with the 924NA torque tube it is very difficult to upgrade the clutch. How was that done? _________________ Mike

I used Spec Stage 3+ clutch kit for 924 NA 215mm clutch, that was rated to ~400Nm iirc.
Pieter (DutchPug) had OEM pressure plate upgraded locally and used some other disc iirc. Check his thread, he wrote about it there. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

A 944 transaxle is also a direct swap you have a more common input shaft size. |

944 NA/924S trans is not stronger at all compared to 924 NA gearbox. Upgrade would be 944S/Turbo/S2 /968 6spd 01E gearbox. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I am interested because I want to be able to use the 4.11 dif gear of my '80 rather than switch to the 3.889 of the 944 as in my looking at the Haynes manual the change over to the 944 torque tube to gain clutch capacity looked quite daunting if wanting to retain the higher gear ratio. But then I have never taken a transmission apart. _________________ Mike

Torque Tube isn't that bad to remove and install as long as you drop the exhaust and the rear suspension. Really, I was able to do this in my garage by myself with a standard jack and jackstands to hold the car up.
That said, if you just want to update to a 5-speed Audi box from a later small spline 924, then it should bolt up to your 77 torque tube with only a change to the later 5-speed shift arm. Clutch splines and torque tube should all work as before (though it might not hurt to refresh the bearings, bushings and other wear items while you're in there).
The 944 swap just opens up the ability to use some of the more common later transaxles and aftermarket clutch discs. Unless you're going to V8 power levels or doing a lot of rally or road racing, I don't know that it is ultimately worth it in most cases. _________________ Stefan
