Thanks for the input, I did move it to below the rail there as I believe that's the only way for sure to clear the rod. Of course, you have all kinds of room without the stocker airbox looks good though, thanks!
By the way, I love your hood "props". How did you go about doing that? |
They are an early attempt. I need to move them inboard more to clear the strut tops. They are cheap "NASCAR" style aluminum hood props with hand made mounting brackets. Got tired of using a piece of shop vac tubing to hold the fibreglass hood up and figured I could do better.

All very good to know, gents, and thanks for doing the leg work. I'm hoping to pick up a few bits this weekend from a guy parting out a 924 and a 944. I'll definitely grab an expansion tank if there is one in good shape.
Thanks for the link, Stefan. Looking forward to checking it out. _________________ 1981 924 N/A 5-speed |

Did you get around to the injector seals yet, Kuhdad? I had my injectors out yesterday and the kit I got from Pelican Parts seems to be for the 2.5 EFI motor, not our 2.0 CIS. There are about 12 pieces in that kit, but we only need 4 larger o-rings.
Just wondering if you received a different kit. _________________ 1981 924 N/A 5-speed |

So the kit I bought originally was incorrect, I returned it and bought the seals from a local "Irish named" car parts store. I can get the part # if needed. They were less than two bucks a pop... Just make sure to pull the injectors straight up then I used a pick to pull the old seals. They were a tight fit for the new seals but I put them on first before putting the injectors back in. _________________ '78 924 N/A |

Rest of my parts should be in today to finish everything else I'm doing. While I waited, I replaced my 10mm vacuum hoses. Still need to get to the next size up for the last of the hoses.
Here's my very pretty stability bracket for the airbox:
Back side:
The flattened side sits on the chassis and is bolted there.
The other side is bolted to the block in a space I'm assuming the powersteering pump pulley would be. Since I have a manual rack, I have a convenient hole.
Closer view:
I put rivets in the fender and where I wanted to place my ignition box.
Ignition box secured and lowered out of the way:
Final placement on tank:

I would unbolt the chassis side of that airbox brace and brace it back with a diagonal or two onto the engine. The engine vibrations will tear something apart there in short order if you leave it like that.
Ideally the airbox and brace should really only be supported by bracketry on the engine itself to avoid strain on the intake ducting.
The extra holes you used on the engine for the bracket are for the Emissions Airpump/A/C compressor. No 924 came with power steering from the factory. Only the 924S which only came with the 944's 2.5L. _________________ Stefan

Makes sense, I have yet to run it but I was planning on beefing up some of my support there, but I hadn't really thought about the vibration. _________________ '78 924 N/A |

Now I come to find out the fuel filter I ordered from Pelican Parts is not correct. Same thing as my injector o-rings. I don't think I'll be ordering from there again. Now to source a filter (the one on the motor only has German on it and is a Knecht FB 637). _________________ '78 924 N/A |

I've got a fuel filter on the way, we'll see how it does. It's a Wix 33016... My boss is pushing me to get the car out of the shop (he wants to work on the Saab he bought off his son). I may have to put the old one on so I can get it running and move it and then change later.
I got my o-rings from O'reilly's, they had to ship them. They are the green ones that Ideola had referred to in another part and seemed to work just fine. They were snug to get on but a little fuel helped ease them on. It's nice putting the injectors in and realizing they actually fit snug and tight as opposed to really really really easy to pull out.
As far as blazing the trail, once I start her up I should know what needs to be braced better as I have like 5 ideas in my head but don't want to go trying every one. I'll let you know!
My v-belt has been an adventure as well... I had a 15350, just tried a 15355, may need the 15360 now. Luckily these are easily found parts. New timing belt and tensioner now, cleaned up the outside of my water pump pulley, did some sand blasting and painting on some various pipes and supports and brackets. She's looking better...

Snapped off a banjo bolt on the control pressure line, how does that even happen with the crush washers? I was tightening it up to torque specs and bam, that's it. _________________ '78 924 N/A |

Wow, I have often worried about doing just that, but I've never seen it happen! At least you don't have to drill a hole...you should be able to *carefully* extract that using a LHD bit or extractor. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

She's really coming along - nice work on cleaning up that front end!
Bummer about the banjo bolt, but hopefully you can source one easily enough. If you have trouble, let me know, I'm going to visit that parts car again in a week and a half and will try to grab all the CIS bits I can. It's a 931 turbo, but I think the same fuel fittings up front.
I should have just used O'Reilly for the seals, they're my closest parts store. I gave P Parts hell about the screw-up with the seal kit and they gave me a refund, but I'm still out the time it took me to take it all apart. Ah, well.
Oh, one thing you might find interesting. The cashier told me that the O'Reilly house brand of filters (can't remember the name, Filtercraft or some such) is actually made by WIX. The one I picked up today actually has the flow indicator on it, though the one I currently have installed did not. _________________ 1981 924 N/A 5-speed |
