+1
I used my 931 as a daily driver for many years but not anymore. In winter time it never had any problems. The 1982 model has a very good cabin heater, excellent. Earlier models might be different. I think I used 5w-40 oil when the weather was colder. Also always used the engine block heater before starting the car. But there was one time I forgot to adjust the timing clock (for example it starts to heat the engine 2 hours before start up) Anyway it was -30 degrees celsius and it still needed only two attempts to start it up with out the block heater.
With good studded tyres the traction is very good and you don't have to be afraid of any kind of winter weather. Go for it! _________________ Mikko

Thanks for all the advice guys. It's getting me excited to actually pull the trigger on this adventure.
I'm thinking about buying one car that is nearby. It has two problems that the owner has told me about. One is the headlights have a gremlin and there is some buzzing when the lights are on. I'm not too worried about sorting that out.
The other problem is that when the car is driven over 2500 RPM, it has a lack of power. I'm assuming this is an issue with the CIS? The current owner believes it is a grounding/electrical problem. But to me it sounds like fuel. Possibly the air flow sensor malfunctioning? Any thoughts? _________________ 1967 Volvo Amazon rally car

If you are sure you will be buying a 924 with CIS you may as well buy a CIS testor now because IMO you should use one to confirm its correct no matter how good you think it runs.
So get yourself a nice CIS testor and you can test that car on the spot and have no doubts.
It sounds like fuel to me too but you never know, or a simple vacuum leak, or possibly an ignition problem, your guess is as good as mine with the basic information you have provided..
I don't know your budget or plan for getting the car in top operating condition before your journey but it may be wise to have your CIS fuel system rebuilt (WUR, fuel distributor, new injectors, filter) before such a massive undertaking just for reliability sake anyway.
And then test it with a CIS testor anyway to make sure sure it's right, I would even bring the CIS tester with you on your journey if I was you, it would likely be a miracle to find one along your journey if you happen to break down.
How much do you know about CIS already?
I would be happy to link you to some good readin/watchin about it if you would like to really wrap your head around it.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified

CIS diagnostic instruction here:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=35734
Lack of power over 2500 could be a number of things, including fuel delivery, weak spark, improper valve and ignition timing, and vacuum leaks. Always a good idea to start with fuel delivery first...new filter, replace external pump, clean the AFM, check flow thru injectors (procedure in Haynes), and a full CIS test as described at the above link.
It would be worth considering "smoking" the intake to find vacuum leaks, and then address anything you find. Common culprits are dried and crack vacuum lines, cracks in the plastic and rubber intake boots, and leaky injector seals.
Then do a full tune-up: new plugs, rotor, cap, air filter, and double check ignition timing.
Once you've done all that, THEN work on getting the idle and fuel mixture set properly.
After that, double check the valve clearances. With all of that done, car should be working good, and you can begin working on other reliability / preventive fixes. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
