This subject has come up before and while we have turned up one of the pre-production 924 turbos here on the board that was used as a rally car...is anyone here aware of the earliest "production" 931...one use that uses the serial numbers 9249400***?? the books say that number 9249400001 was the first but most information on this topic is spoty at best. The registry lists number 92 as the oldest known in the world...what about the 91 cars before it? in the 10 plus years of the registry one would think an earlier car would have turned up by now. thoughts?
regards,
Paul |

Being that the 92494******* cars were ROW I wonder how many Porsche kept, how many may have been crash tested, how many were show/press vehicles, etc. basically how many never made it into private hands? Considering that this was back in 1979 I'm guessing records will have been kept but maybe now hard to come by. You do pose an interesting question though!
What I'd like to know is the whereabouts of chassis numbers 9249500001 to 9249500009 which represents the 9 USA Turbos from 1979! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

TJC about year ago a non-runner turned up on Craigslist in MA. It was billed as a 79 924 turbo US spec with round reflectors, US bumpers and oddly an outside has filler. Infortunately I did not get the VIN. But I would bet a donut this is in the pocket of cars you are talking about. |

Regarding what happened to them, the first few were likely press vehicles which later ended up in private hands. That was the case for 928s, and in fact this guy has acquired the first pre-production 928 ever made. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

If I recall correctly, there was a two-tone green press vehicle 931 in the UK that popped up for sale a couple of years ago. There was some discussion of it here, and I think I snagged photos of it in my Picasa album (which I cannot access presently due to firewall restrictions at my employer). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

| the UK rhd cars came about a full year after euro production began. There was a pocket of cars produced from around august 1978 till Nov 1978 as 1979 Turbos that I am trying to track down. There is talk of as high as 100 cars built and as little as about 50 during that period. The low end quote I received directly from stuttgart. None of it jives though. a lot of conflicting info. |

A clue: this tidbit according to werk924:
924 Turbo "introduction model", US only, 600 pieces, June-July 1979, diamond silver over dolomite gray 2-tone paint, pasha interior.
These two-tone early 931s pop up quite frequently, which isn't surprising given there were 600 of them. Might be worth looking in to the VIN for every one that you see (have you asked Rasta about SHAG-E???), given the June-July 79 production date mentioned. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

the earliest known US spec car was tested by Road and Track Feb 1979. it was indeed a two tone car but not in the fashion that we commonly see and had a plaid interior. the contrasting color was above the belt line. i do not have a chassis number but just a test plate number of s-04843. I am not sure if this car ever made it across to the US or if it was crashed or scrapped.
VW & Porsche mag which was always late to the road test party tested a car like you describe state side in April of 1980. silver/grey bottom pasha interior.
According to what I have read the US spec cars did not officially go on sale here as 1980's until August of 1979. |

Interestingly Slonigers book indicates all of the 1982 cars built for 79 as eurospec. But. And this is a big but. He indicates chassis number 924950 as a starting point for US cars but no production. I have to compare this to Boschen/Barths The Porsche book. As I mentioned in the first post there is a lot of conflicting info even from the factory. |

My 79 931 was originally two tone silver and gray with red plaid seats. I sold the seats on this site and painted the car, Cassis and changed the interior to black. It is now Forest Green Met.
My car number is in the 1705 range. Not the oldest but that is what I have.

Hey Vince
Do you know the original delivery date for your car or production date? I'm curious what month it was made. Yours is towards the tail end of 1979 production. Total said to have been made for 1979 was 1982. Like I said though "said" to have been made. |

Here's a link to an album of that right hooker press car I mentioned earlier in the thread:
