I have seen some stuff about knurling piston skirts to increase their OD in order to bring the piston-bore clearance tolerances back into check...

Like this...

But anyway I was curious if this method would work on other clearance sensitive parts that experience wear on there OD surfaces..

Say maybe g31 synchro rings?

I don't believe the issue with synchro rings to be one of clearances, but rather of finish.

Interesting thought, though.

"Our new Carbon Moly Synchros have a new and improved proprietary composition that promotes Quick & Smooth shifting in addition to a more dependable braking surface. With a stronger brass body and improved locking angle, our Carbon Moly Synchros will take your tachometer to the limit."

I wonder if this coating could be applied to our existing worn rings to add a few thou of OD and give a nice friction surface

Maybe I'll call them...

Called them, they said it sounded possible but the way they manufacture them it may not be plausible to run a one off set...

And to call back tomorrow after he finds out more for me..

Seems brass syncros with this coating are very popular with honda car people revving to 11k rpm and such..

Its not just the frictional surface inside the synchro ring but also the cone that the synchro rides on. When the cone wears down, the synchro will bottom out before the synchro has reached its full life. Syncro useful life is directly related to cone wear.
