|
|
I only drive my 931 on trackday's about once a quarter.
That is why it is hard to get used to the dogleg shift patern, and the dogleg doesn't shift very fast (maybe the synchro's are a bit worn also).
I have a complete 944 (1984) parts car. So I am thinking of converting my 931 to the 016J gearbox.
What do you guy's think, a shame to loose the G31 or go for the easier and faster shifting 944 gearbox ? _________________ 937 trackday car

I've had both, and the G31, a rebuilt one, still shifted hard. Have 931 Audi trannies in both track cars, much better. The 944 tranny has a taller 5th gear, but how often is one in 5th? The 931 might be better off with a taller 5th anyway. Of course, you'll have to swap out the torque tube as well. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Faster shifting? Are you drag racing?
If you want to bang the gearbox Fast and Furious style, try a Miata. _________________ Toofah King Bad

If I shift form 3 to 2 or 4 to 3 it you have to shift gentle. Maybe me synchros are worn a bit also.
The track in Zandvoort (the Netherlands) has al lost of corners so I am losing a few seconds there. _________________ 937 trackday car

Mine(80 931) shifts fine, its just the stupid lever moves hard and its difficult to engage 1st and reverse. Must be them bushings i guess.
The dogleg is much more imediate than the Audi boxes.
Its hard to explain, i have both on two different cars and while both are nice to drive, the Audi one is a bit less connected, the dogleg just shoots off the line as soon as you think letting go of the clutch. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Do you really need 2nd on zandvoort? I never use lower than 3rd and our Swedish tracks are small. My g31 works nice on track, changed some syncros and 1st dogring, pretty easy job to do. Changed the bushings+short shifter, makes the shifting extremely tight. Do you any Rev matching on down shifts? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

If his track days are once a quarter, either get used to the G31 and it's slow shifts, or install the Audi tranny and not worry about it. _________________ '83 944 Track car.
