|
|
I have read a lot about the rear wiper delete, and plugs. I bought my 88 924S and it already had the plug in. I have recently started driving Veronica (88 924S) more and its been raining and missy all week and its hard to see out the back cause the water loves holding on to my back window. I have rainx'ed it really well 3 layers, and just made it bead up but is still obstructing my view. So sort of wondering do most ppl delete the rear wiper for looks and speed reasons? Or were there fundamental problems with the system, and did it not work well? Because I'd like to reinstall it!
So my main question is does any one know much about reinstalling the rear wiper and what all goes into it? I have seen many rear wiper motors, arms and switches, but I'm wondering if there is a relay for it, cause I haven't seen one, and how exactly power is run to it?
Any advice or knowledge would be helpful!! thanks! _________________ Ian McGee |

The 924S was designed and built with a rear wiper.
there is nothing inherently wrong with the system, I think people delete them because they think the lines of the car are "cleaner" without it..
The wiring will probably still be there, and you should be able to pick up a motor and wiper arm on Ebay (definitely on the UK site anyway).
Definitely a good idea to reinstate it

Just to be clear; the rear wiper was optional. My car and many others never had it. The plug is a factory installed part.
That said, all the wiring and bracket on the hatch is there. You just need the the motor and wiper arm. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Yup...I forgot that there was an option
If the car originally came without a wiper then "icm257" may need to source a switch for the centre switch panel as well. _________________ White 1983 924 - Renovated to near original condition and my daily driver

yeah it has the wire tube running along the window and the bracket, so Im thinking it came with it, and was taken off. Im not the best at electrics when it comes to fixing things, so where would I be getting the power from to operate the motor, obviously the wiring from the motor to the switch, but then the switch to where? cause the wiring was taken out of the car, along with the switch. I have three switch holes in my center console, that I don't know what they are from..any one know? _________________ Ian McGee |

3 x switches.
1 is the change-over between the door mirrors adjustment.
1 is the rear wiper on / off
1 is the headlight washer spring loaded on switch.
The wiring loom is behind carpet / panel on the left side by the wheel arch.
The original wiring would have been plugged in there.
Good luck

Don't forget to get a couple of toothpics and clean out the tiny water outlets where the rear glass meets the rear wing. There are two of them and they are near where the locking pins are. These get easily clogged up and will hold a puddle of water right on the glass and the wing. _________________ MOD

I'm getting ready to install a rear wiper on my '88. I bought a parts car that has the rear wiper and thought it would be a nice addition. The car I plan to swap it onto never had one.
I haven't really been able to dig deep into it, but from the looks of it I may be a lot of work. I may end up having to swap the hatch and even need to swap the wiring harness. As I dig deeper I'll post my findings. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Thanks for the offer, I haven't been able to get around to this project yet but I believe the harness I have is in great shape. I still need to dig deeper but if I find that it's been sliced I may want it, if not maybe someone else here may want it for their project. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

I'm very much a noobie with these cars but it would surprise me if all the wiring isn't already run, the factory wouldn't bother to have unique harness for options, just the important bits, right? the switch and motor/arm, everything 'should" be there to plug into? That's how it is on most of my old cars, all the A/C wiring and other "options" wiring is just sitting there unplugged. _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,

That was my first assumption. Here are some of my finding so far....
Here is the hatch with the wiper. As you can see there are two sets of wires, one for the wiper and the other for the brake light.
This is a hatch without the wiper. There is no wiring for the wiper. While running wiring wouldn't be hard, that's not the biggest issue, I'll get to that in a moment.
The hatch wiring is easily unplugged from the main harness. The main harness is the same for all cars, so the easiest thing is to just swap the whole hatch.
This is the non-wiper hatch plug. Note only the wires for the brake light.
The main reason I say that it may be easier to swap the hatches is due to the brackets being different. The bracket for the wiper has nuts for screws to go into while the non-wiper hatches does not. While you could get around this, I'm not going to bother since swapping it is easier in my case.
Also, the wiring for this switch is non-existent in my non-wiper car. Most likely I can just swap in the wiring by plugging it in to the main harness, but I've not gotten that far yet.
I hope that helps! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior
