First of all - HUGE thanks to the great support and friendship from this board. I REALLY appreciate all of you! Tempted to name but too many and afraid I might forget somoene. What a cool forum of dudes.

Well, I have spent so much $$$ to get my 81 931 to "operating as designed" (since i'm not a wrencher, combined with the hassle to source parts, I have spent an embarrassing amount of $$$ so far), that I am thinking about going all the way and getting her painted.

It is fun to drive, I love the retro analog feel.

Car is black on black, with my work, interior is 9.5/10 incl leather sport seats. At this point ALL systems are working as new (other than a nagging rubbing/grinding sound when taking a left corner at speed...came with the car, among all the other issues...), car is fairly reliable now.

Plan - 1977 924 Martini & Rossi tribute. I have the correct stripes, white is an easy color change over black, and I will paint the D90s white to match.
Any thoughts on that? I think it will look great.

The help I need:

1. What seals do I HAVE to source?
2. How/where to source new door handles & gaskets (mine are shot/orig)?
3. I "might" splurge for 968 handles AND mirrors prior to paint. Thoughts on that?

any other pre-paint advice welcome!

You know what, why paint it? a black martini would be awesome. There are many white ones, some of them look great, some of them dont. But how about a black martini...that should look uber sexy.
Can you try to mockup the stripes? maybe with some double sided tape here and there under the unsticked stripes?

Thanks for the replies.
Currently the car is wearing a white matte plasti-dip.

The car needs paint, low $ respray not holding up, lotsa flaws, etc.
To do a decent black re-paint will cost a fortune as it will need tons of labor (blocking, etc), to get black to look decent. White is much easier to get a decent result. I have always loved the white 924 M&R edition, ever since seeing a new one in the flesh in 1977.

I will give some thought to a black respray. Portion of the M&R replica stripes are black though, won't show up on black car.
It would be cool to be able to do a photo shop or something...

Why do you say its easyer to get a white coat over a black coat?
You'd have to completely strip the doors(cards, trim and rubber) as the paint is visible on the inside of the door frames, completely strip the rear interior as well as the paint is visible from the inside of the car.
Then what about the engine bay and fuel filling hatch...rear hatch will have to come off, as well as the sunroof.
On the contrary, its MUCH easyer to respray it black as only the outside surfaces would have to be painted.
So in the end i'm sure it is much more expensive to change the car's colour than to just respray it.

If you really want a white 924, then maybe a good idea is to remove the plasti-dip and wrap it in white. There are shops that can do this professionally and the result will be fully reversible, good quality and long lasting.

If you post some pictures here i'm sure somebody will photoshop them for you

you have to decided the level of paint you want...you want a concourse job? If so you are looking at pulling the engine and everything apart. (I am doing this on the euro 79 CGT and it is a lot of work) color changes on these cars are work. I'm not of fan of black cars (and I own one vintage car that is) I think the 924s look great in some of the funky light metallic colors they were offered in....the light green metallic, minerva blue, light orange...just my thoughts. like you said...white does hide well but it will still be work to do a proper color change.

I had a concourse paint resto done in diamond silver on my old 77.5...we were able to not paint the engine bay because it was in excellent shape and blended the door jambs.

In the end you gotta decide what level of paint resto you want and then work from there.

After speaking with a world class automotive wrap guy that I am lucky enough to have been referred to, I have decided to wrap the car in gloss white top half with gloss red lower, two tone, similar to Carrera RSR's car. I will source thin black side molding and we will use that as the "seem cover" for the seem of the white & red. I will keep the mirrors gloss black as they are, and I will get the D90's powder coated gloss black (great local expert here, recently did my Cayenne 21's in gloss black and they look awesome - he uses low temp, does most of the local high-end wheels).

Any thoughts?

Quite a change from martini white but that color combination is very nice on a 931. I think its a good idea.

Nick, I will sell you my stripes. I sourced them from a tip off here, bought them from the cool guy in the UK that makes them (sorry I dont recall name but can look that up. I don't recalll but I think aprox $150. They are still in the tube, perfect. LMK

Sounds awesome but I'm not doing any cosmetic changes until after I finish this engine swap which isn't going to well right now.
