I guess it's about time I started a thread on my engine swap even though it is in the early stages. I bought a donor car and pulled the engine/tranny. I plan on using everything I can from the original car. I'm even considering using the master cylinder and booster from the Passat. They take up less room and if they can stop that big station wagon I bet the 924 would be zero problem. I pulled the engine with all the original wiring in place. I'll be running the factory computer at first, then later I'll probably at an APR chip. The stage one chip claims 205hp which should be a boat load of fun. I'll try to take as many pictures as I can. Sometimes when I get into working on stuff I forget to take the snap shots. |

Donor car, I picked up this running and kind of driving 1.8t Passat for $500 because it had a bad comfort control modual and the owner couldn't figure out what was wrong. I took two wires, jumped out the starter interlock and drove it up onto the tow dolly.
Here's the 1.8t with all it's factory wiring. The original computer sits in a plastic box in a little cubby hole in front of the driver under the hood very similar to the empty spot the 924 has. I plan on mounting the computer in that empty spot.

Cool project, best of luck!
A bit of advice. . .refresh ALL cooling system components on that 1.8, including plastic flanges/water necks, coolant temp sensor. Also reseal the valve cover gasket and replace cam sensor and solenoid, refresh the breather system, and refresh the timing belt and front of engine seals. All this is standard maintenance, and will be much more pleasant during "leisure time" on the stand. |

I have to replace the plastic cooling peices as a broke more than one of them in my attemps to remove them. The engine bay of a Passat makes the 924 bay look like the Grand Canyon in comparison. I also plan to rebearing and rering it along with all gaskets. Like I stated before I'm still early in the project. Thanks for the encouragement. I was kind of scared when I started but with each step I go more confident and excited! |

I sawed the Passat transaxle in half. It will require some more cutting and a little grinding to make a good bellhousing.

I haven't made much progress lately. I got the engine and transaxle out but the torque tube Iis still in there for now. The car looks like a 4x4 with no drivetrain.

No you didnt
Passat is not a transaxle design, its gearbox is next to the engine _________________ https://www.the924.com |

"a transaxle is a major mechanical component that combines the functionality of thetransmission, the differential, and associated components of the drivenaxle into one integrated assembly"
According to this definition, yes I did. |

Sent what was left of my Passat transaxle off to the machine shop on Thursday. I should have it back next week. I'll take it to my cousin to weld the back plate on after I get it back. Then I'll mock it up for my torque tube holes. Then test fit/motor moumt design. |
