That's what happens when you take a 944 engine, mis-time the lower balance shaft and take that to it's ultimate conclusion. This is after 2 hours of run time - the oil pickup tube reinforcement cracked, the tie-in to the oil drain tube cracked, and eventually the pickup tube cracked near its mounting point.

We got all of 1 hour of race time in before this happened. At least we get a discount for the next race

Yep, oooops. I did the balance shafts on my Turbo car back about 10 years ago, and of course after that I 'knew everything', so didn't reverify with the manual on which key to put the gear on.

I figured that since this was a production situation that they would make it so that things would actually make sense - the stamped "O" should show in the opening on the thrust washer, and that they would put the pointer in the correct place for both shafts.

NOT! Stoooopid German Engineering.....

New engine is in the car since last weekend - let's hope that it lasts longer than the last one.

The weird thing about it was that you couldn't tell at all from the engine that the balance shafts were out of time.

I have had them 1 tooth off before, and you can notice that at higher RPM. If the lower balance shaft is installed using the wrong keyway they are ~170 degrees off, and the engine idled fine and rev'ed just fine...

Live and learn.

Still interested in a seat this fall, should one come open! I got the enduro fever. . .nothing more awesome than racing at night.

Oh, and speaking of live and learn? My oil pressure light is wired to a huge 2.5 inch LED array in the middle of the dash. No missing it.

Why aren't you running Vegas then? It's all at night on the Roval.

The only HUGE problem is that it's in August. Sorry by Vegas is HOT, not that much different than Phoenix.

Next night race for us will be Buttonwillow next year, at least I hope. Autoclub Speedway is coming up in Oct. but that's only a Double 7, and all of the guys who lost out on Buttonwillow are making up for that here.

I am thinking of running the Chumpcar chumpionship race in Nov. in Vegas, but this one is on the outside road course. I might need a driver for that one, Rasta...

Oh, and regarding the oil pressure: The driver noticed it immediately when we lost all oil pressure, but didn't believe his eyes or something. I have 2 oil pressure idiot lights in addition to the gauge, but those didn't go off for some reason - maybe a wiring issue that I need to figure out.

Any way, he ended up driving the car about 2 miles on the track, back to the pits with no oil pressure. The rod went shortly after that. I give that engine credit for surviving as long as it did.

Not healed up by August. November, on the other hand. . .

Does this car have the 22 gallon tank upgrade?

I was thinking about doing that to the car, but gave up when I was hanging off of the gas tank with all of my weight and the darned thing didn't move a micron when I tried to get it out.

My friend had a similar failure to his 944 this weekend. Interesting to see it taken apart, we pulled the engine on his but haven't disassembled it yet.
