Ok, I'm a little more excited than Chuck. He's been here a few more times than me. This was my first MARRS podium

It was a fantastic weekend. Friday I got all 5 practice sessions in and I was running competitive times. Saturday qualifying was another story, a total mess. Six drivers went for a loop out of 38 cars in the group and a nice looking ITS 240sx left it's nose between T8 and T9. I didn't come close to getting a clean lap.

For the Saturday qualifying race I was 9th in ITB. Normally that would not be so bad, but because of the mess in qualifying I was behind an ITC car. At the start every one on the left side from that little Rabbit back saw the right lane plow through. In another of my Mark Webber starts I was around P11 or 12 by the time we got out of T1.

But...I had a lot of fun getting through the field and made it up to 7th. More importantly I had a good lap so I was qualified 6th for the 18 lap Sunday race.

Sunday's start went well and I was out of T1 in P6 sticking to the lead pack. There was so much fighting at the front I was able to drive at 9/10ths and stay with the field. From there it was just a matter of being patient. The red Golf fell off in T2 so I was in fifth. I then caught the MR2 on the front straight and drafted by. Now I was P4 and Chuck and Matti in his 2002 were going two wide all over the track. I stayed with them and eventually Matti locked them all up in T5 so I was up to P3.

Slowing too much to let an ITS car have the line in T10 (never again!) I let my guard down and the red Golf was back in the hunt. He caught me going into T1 and I let him have it. I was upset, but I knew I could get back by. His tires looked shot on the grid, so I figured by now they had to be toast. I stayed with him through the carousel, fell back a little in T10 and caught him down the straight. The next two laps were a matter of picking my way through lapped Spec-7s, something I don't have a lot of experience with, but I held on to take P3 by about half a second.

Here's a link to the video. It's not great so don't get excited. The mic is messed up so there is no sound, and yes I need to move the camera higher.

For reference, I'm the old bearded guy on the left. First place was Kevin Fryer driving my old IT-B 2002 BMW enduro car. None of the Hondas showed up this week. However, it is kind of cool to have two 924s on the podium.

Lets just say that the skin and paint and windshield were from your old car.

In case anyone is interested, here is the race from my in-car. Crew mounted the camera a bit high but you get the idea. Hayes followed me for most of the race as his video shows.

Chuck -who apparently liked early apexes that day.

How many BMWs spun behind you, like 3? And that one guy near the end that passed you in 1 was crashing for a couple of turns before finally really getting going the wrong way. His tires must have been getting a little greasy there near the end and I'm sure the dirt stuck all over them wasn't helping either.

Your move on the 02 going into 1 was priceless. Go left once. Go left twice. Then look like you're going left again, draw him left and go right and outbrake. That'll work. Har.

Nice drive!

Ed,
As Paul Newman and Jim Fitzgerald used to say: "Old age and treachery....."
