Yeah. I had to remove the protective casing to get it in there. After 40 min of wiggling and swearing I got it. It is a good idea to lay a blanket on the floor to rest the door on while you work. _________________ 87 924s

This weekend I made up new lenses for all of my gauges. I used scratch resistant and uv resistant Lexan. I diched the cone lenses on the cluster, tach and speedo.
I also finished painting the brackets and assembled the alternator and put everything on the engine.

My car is off of the rotisserie finely. The motor is mounted...finally found an affordable steel scattershield.
I finished the headers.
left side
right side
They are out getting ceramic coated
I finely feel like I am accomplishing something. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

I was looking through your albums and came across this.

It interests me right now as I am elbow deep in a 944 transmission. I know that this is a G31 with a ZF lsd, but what else can you tell me about it? Have you had any issues with parts availability and compatibility? How do you expect this to hold up to 500+ horsepower? _________________ 87 924s

Some parts can be a problem to find like the 1st/rev slider. Bearings are very expensive. The diff is late 915/930 fine spline. 4th and 5th gears are interchangeable with 915. You could use a 915 R & P...I thought about using an 8:31 from a 915 but I came across a Euro G31 for a good price so I used the 8:33.
I don't expect to have any trouble with the G31 and the v8 although just as with a 944T transaxle, I wouldn't expect it to like burnouts. But I don't foresee and issues with full power in gear. These do not shift like the AUDI and some people don't like it just because of that. It has a modified shift pattern with first to the left ans down with reverse above it. So 2-5 is in an H pattern.
I used the late 915 1st gear synchro on first and 928 synchros on 2nd & 3rd. I have been wondering if these could be modified to use cone type synchro parts from a late 928. But it is a little expensive to buy a 928 transaxle to play with. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

More pictures:
ceramic coated headers
clutch master cylinder brace
power steering/hydroboost lines
also shows evaporative emissions lines
I don't have the lines clamped to the reservoir because I am going to powder coat it first. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

I take my hat off to you crazy v8 guys, that's a lot of work to make it all happen and you have a real beast when you're finished!
Looking at some other photos in your album, it looks like you will need a big bonnet scoop to get the bonnet to close with that huge air filter. Is is that an old photo? _________________ 1981 932 with mods:

It isn't an old picture. For the time being I am using a carb. After I get the car on the road, I will be adding multiport fuel injection. This will clear the stock hood.
Right now I need to find another hood because I have my GT scoop bonded onto the original hood and I don't want to cut this one up. I will need about 2"of space above the hood to fit with the carb. I think a Chevy s-10 cowl induction scoop will cover it. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

is this the mustang or bmw unit,
running with power steering rack or closed loop??
also did you use the stock mounting location?
cheers

Hey leadfoot,
Going for a LS1 conversion now? Can't wait to see the results. I would love to have a look at it some time. _________________ 1981 932 with mods:

You are not kidding. I think the pinion bearing for the 944 unit is pushing 150 just for roller and race.
I was really thankful that the bearings in my transmission were all in great shape but one. _________________ 87 924s
