|
|
| so i have a 931, and my old tank cracked in several places. could not find one anywhere other than a few newer ones for expensive, so i decided to get the 944. my question is, how is it supposed to be routed? the stock 931 has one big port to that connects to the hardline, and the overflow port that goes to the top of the radiator. the 944 has one big port on the bottom, but what appears to be two overflow ports - one under the cap and then one on the underside. do i just need to block one of these off? leave it vented? |

On mine, (which is a NA, but uses the same radiator as the 931):
I plugged the overflow port from the radiator to the port on the underside of the tank.
The line from the filler neck was routed down past the frame rail.
The larger port went to the smaller port on the passenger side of the radiator.

| oh ok..so you pretty much changed it to an open-vent style system? i know these were a sealed pressurized system so i wasnt sure if it was going to make it run worse or overheat due to changing it. thanks for the help |

As long as you don't overheat or over-pressurize it, then you'll be fine.
If you're concerned you can add a generic overflow bottle and attach it to the vent line (not a bad idea for track cars, honestly)
You may want to look at having the steel tubes and the radiator "boiled" out at a local radiator shop since they like to corrode internally and can lead to cooling system failures. This includes the tube that runs the intake to the heater core and back of the cylinder head.
BTW, did you know there is a generic unit available (from the Scirroco I believe?) that fits and works like stock?

I also have a spare here that appears to not leak, if you're interested.
Good luck! _________________ Stefan

| So I installed it, looks really nice. Temps are staying down. But I went into the store and came out and my car still voided itself all over the parking lot. Its got a new 180 degree thermostat. And the temps stayed at the top of the first white block. |

Looks like your expansion tank cap is faulty. It can be a weak spring or rubber seal in the bottom of the cap. When you shut off the engine it starts to build up some extra temp and pressure in the cooling system due to the lack of coolant circulation. So if the cap isn't sealed properly or can't hold the pressure, it drops coolant from overflow port on the cap neck. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Also you might need to bleed the system more than once to get all of the air out of it.
That's easy to do and if that fails to work then you can try replacing the cap. _________________ Stefan

| Just seems like no matter what I do it wants to leak coolant lol.when I first got the car it had the stock reservoir. It would flow out of the cap after I turn off the car. Got a new cap, then it proceeded to crack the tank and leak out of that. Now this. I've completely drained the system once, but couldn't find the bleed valve. I just drained everything from the lower radiator hose |

There is a drain on the driver's side of the radiator to empty the system.
The bleed for the cooling system is on the top of the thermostat housing, a small 10mm headed bolt.
Start with the car completely cold, open the heater all the way, remove the bolt and start the car.
Let it idle until it warms up and coolant starts flowing out the hole.
Shut the car off and put the bolt in the hole and tighten it (not too much, just so it doesn't leak).
Check the fluid level and take it for a drive and see if it still leaks when it shuts down.
If it does, let it cool completely and bleed the system again.
That should do it, if not then your cap is leaking or you have a bad headgasket. _________________ Stefan

| Gotcha thanks... I will do that tomorrow probably as its already hot todat. Was trying the old school method ogjust burping it by running it with the cap off and filling it. Every 6 minutes or so water ewould bubble up and pour out of the cap then go back down and I'd keep filling it. I don't think it would be the head gasket since I just had it idling for about 30 minutes and it never went above th e second white mark on the gauge |

Fill to MIN when cold, or it will overflow until the end of time. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I've been having problems with my 944 header tank as well. 944 cap was peeing water all over the place. Replaced with used 951 cap and was fine for a short while until I had a bad head gasket. Just ordered a coolant swirl pot in an attempt to bleed off any air plus bought a new 951 cap. Hope both do the job and its not another bad head gasket or warped head. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife
