Qualified 2nd to the blue VW Golf (starts to her right)... ran strong, but got hung up behind the rookie in the orange RX7 (in a different class, IT7)... They were having fun, till the IT7 fast guy (who went off in Turn 3 at the start) caught back up.
After he gave Merritt a nice bump-draft down the front straight, he and Merritt together filled the rookie's mirrors... FLINCH! The rookie out-brakes himself and loops it right in front of both of 'em!
Merritt gets the worse half of the deal, sliding to a stop, stalling the car, then getting bonked by Don, the rookie, as he fails to go both-feet-in in his spin, and rolls back into her! Gack!
But starter improvements have paid off, Merritt was able to restart the car, and get going... after the entire rest of the field passed her!
Then she... charges the field!!! With a little encouragement from yours truly on the radio... she chases 'em back down, then picks 'em off one by one, till she's in third and chasing down the 2nd place VW...
I won't spoil the excitement, other than to point out that, in her best-ever weekend of racing, she swept 2nd place all weekend! Wasn't going real fast, but she was held up by Don in the remaining races, so couldn't set a great pace.
But she's on her game now, and looking forward to her next race weekend at Mid-Ohio for the IT-Fest in early August... meantime, more training in the go-karts!
