|
|
Before I start the engine rebuild/replacement for the '87 924S previously discussed, I want to have a plan.
From wikipedia's section on the 924S: "The decision was made to equip the narrower bodied 924 with a slightly detuned version of the 944's 163 bhp 2.5 litre straight four, upgrading the suspension but retaining the 924's early interior. The result was 1986's 150 bhp 924S."
Since we will already be at best taking the engine apart, how do I make the engine a 944's? Since it was already designed to be the better engine, this seems like the easiest engine upgrade I could possibly do. _________________ Drive Fast, but Stay Straight |

Either 88 pistons or aftermarket copies. That extra power comes from higher compression. . .nothing else. IMO, a huge hassle for a small gain. Your money is better spent on suspension.
Also, a chip wouldn't hurt. We have a 944MAX in the race car and like it. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I think it's a bit of a misnomer to say that the 924S engine was detuned. For whatever that's worth
On the chip subject, I had an FRWilk chip in the 87 S that my son was driving for a while, and it definitely "woke it up" a bit. Nothing dramatic, but a noticeable gain in throttle response, particularly when combined with the modified throttle cam, both cheap options for improving the driving experience. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I have to agree. Having owned a plie of 944 and 924s cars I can honestly say that I never noticed a performance difference between a standard issue 944 and a pre 88 924s. While a change truly was made to the engine I feel that it was more for the press than anything else. _________________ 87 924s

As soon as spring gets here I plan to swap out my chip in my 1988 924s,
Any suggestions as to what spark plugs I should use? |

The 10.6:1 ROW engines made 156 SAE net horsepower, the 163 is a DIN rating where the engine is tested without Power steering, A/C, and other accessories.
The 10.2:1 '88 engine made 158 SAE net horsepower.
When Porsche began standardizing the engines, they also standardized the performance tests, which meant no more inflated DIN numbers.
Also, Porsche attributes the power bump of the '88 engine solely to the DME maps, and not to the compression.
You will not get 156hp by just swapping ROW pistons into your car; you'll also need a code plug to run the correct DME map...
Just thought I'd clear some of this up. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior
