Yes. You will need to use your old lock barrels. The rest is a straight swap

Thanks Carrera RSR. You've got the best looking 924 I've ever seen. _________________ 05 997

The early lock cylinders are not direct bolt-in with the script handles. You have to have the lock cylinders from an 87-onward 944 (the 924S uses the early 924 lock cylinders). You can take the old lock cylinder and the new lock cylinders to a locksmith to have the later style lock cylinders re-keyed to your existing key. I've seen one person post that they were able to get the early ones to work, but they didn't explain how, and I don't know how they would have made it work because there is no way to secure the early style cylinders in the script handles. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Good point Dan, you've just reminded me that the barrel swap wasn't the answer. I pulled the barrel keys out of the early lock and re keyed the late barrels to match my key. No locksmith involved. Just watch out for the tiny retaining springs don't fire off as you pull the barrel keys out. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Thanks for the input. Any guidance as to how best remove the cylinders without all the individual keys coming loose? Maybe I just bring the old and new handles to the locksmith and assume he will know how to do it.
Any tips on removal/installation relative to the linkage? I've read several threads that make it sound difficult given lack of access and delicate components. _________________ 05 997

Its extremely simple. I did it with no instructions. Once you look at it on the bench it's self explanatory. Google search Golf mk1 re key or similar as they are the same. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Second that, fitted late 944 handles to my 83 924 and swapped the barrels over with no problems, just take it slow and you will see what to do. _________________ 1983 N/A

When the key is inserted into the cylinder the individual shear pins are captured. It's NOT like a home door lock with small pins... It is more like blades that have a rectangular slot for the key to pass through. When the key is inserted fully, the individual shear blades all should be flush. Once the cyl is removed ( key inserted) you can slowly pull the key out while capturing each shear blade. All that being said there are ways to cheat a little on these shear blades. They can be rearranged, sanded or filed flush when key is inserted. _________________ Ken - ebay: wandrey1 , *0 , *00 , *01

I got my early style lock cylinders to work in my script handles without the use of a locksmith. I remember it not being a direct swap, but it wasn't a very hard modification IIRC. _________________ 1980 924 NA

Sourced a nice pair of script handles and had them re-keyed. Read the Clark's procedure for removal and install as well as a bunch of threads describing what a PITA this job is. I tried removing from the outside with no luck. Took the door card off thinking this would make life easier only to find the window guide rail blocks access and I can't figure out how to remove it. Struggled to remove the handle from inside and outside for about two hours them gave up in defeat. I know what needs to be done just can't get decent access.
Any suggestions? I'm stumped at this point. _________________ 05 997

Gave it another shot and figured out the window rail. Lots of trial and error followed but finally sorted it out and got both handles on. Nice upgrade over original handles. _________________ 05 997

cool handles, hopefully, I can find a set that doesn't cost 1/6th of what I paid for my whole car... _________________ 1978 924, aka The Red Rocker |
