1981 2 litre 5 speed 924. Sometimes it starts right up, but a lot of times it just cranks. There's a half tank of new gas, and a good battery in it. When it doesn't start, it cranks great. Any suggestions?

All of the above. Maybe warn more than any of the other options.

Fuel accumulator may be bad, causing fuel pressure leak down, check little screw for leaking fuel. Some have installed a 'hot start switch' to engage cold start injector to get fuel going.

This may sound crazy, but, might want to try different ways of starting; gas pedal to the floor when hot, or maybe half way, or not at all. I have had varying results with this, usually when it's warm or hot I floor it then let off when it starts to go.

If that doesn't work, could likely be a problem with the WUR and/or Aux air Valve. May also be an issue with the injectors. If it runs good once started, might want to try some Techron fuel treatment.

How does it run once it gets started?

Since its at my dads for a while I asked him to fiddle with it a bit today. He said he shot some starter fluid in to it to no availe, leading me to think that spark is the issue. I'm going to remove and replace the cap and rotor as a start. Here's to hoping!

And to answer joejax' final question, once it gets running it runs like a top. Nice high oil pressure, nice steady idle, and good temp. As of now however it's starting less and less

The handbook Porsche made when the cars were new said to start it with the accelerator floored when it was hot, but with no accelerator when cold. I can also confirm the former makes it quite a bit easier to start when warm! However, I hold mine at about a quarter accelerator when cold and then for a minutes or so until the idle speed gets up.

Wade.

Thanks Wade, I tend to do the same with mine, I thought I had heard it was written somewhere.

Benn, good to hear it runs good once started, hopefully others will chime in but I would guess the WUR is probably gummed up and not working right.

Might be a dumb question, but what is this "WUR" that you speak of?

Warm-Up Regulator

Bolted to the #4 intake runner near the firewall, below the coil.
