This summer, I was just going to install euro bumpers on my side-marker delete 924S. However, my plans changed when a I found a guy parting two 944 turbos.

The engine is from a '87 944 turbo. The bottom end has all new bearings and seals.

I only got the block in yesterday, so it will be awhile before the turbo goes in, but I brought it out and took some pics anyway. The unit is a rebuilt k26/6.

Please take lots of photos of heat shielding, and wiring harness installation for KLR and DME.

You doing the fat tank upgrade as well?

Will do!

Rasta, I am planning on doing the tank swap eventually, but I'm not sure that I will get around to it this summer.

As for the heat shielding, I should have all of it installed within the next week or so. I'll post it up then.

Here's my DME and KLR sitting on the floor board. The carpet is from a 944 S2 with the gap, so they will eventually go in their proper location.

You will need take your measurements from the inside so that you don't drill in to the battery tray. Once measured, you can just transfer it to the engine bay, so that you can sit and drill, (with engine out). The hole saw I used was 2 1/2" (64mm). However, I think a 2 1/4" would have made for a better fit.

Afterwards, I filed the hole into the desired shape.

Here is the wiring harness as it enters the passenger compartment.

I should also add that my car is an A/C delete. I'm not sure where the hole would need to enter on cars equipped with A/C. There is enough slack in the 944 turbo wiring harness for it to sit lower, however that would move it closer to the exhaust.

EDIT:
I post pics of how to splice the 944 Turbo wiring harness into the 924S harness later on and make a diagram.

While I wait for parts to arrive, I thought I'd clean up some of the mess.

I'm going for that factory fresh look.

The wiring harness sleeve was very brittle and breaking apart. I wasn't sure that I would like this conduit, but after installing it, I think it looks much better than what the factory used.

Are you adding a late rad/intercooler subframe? 931 vented header panel?

Oh, and do you need an LSD trans to go with your new setup?

At the moment, I'm only planning to modify my front enough to accept an aftermarket intercooler that will sit in front of the radiator. I don't plan on switching to a 931 nose panel.

I'll be picking up a LSD 951 trans later this summer.

I've been out of town the past few weekends and haven't had much time to work on my car.

Before I start putting things back together, I thought I'd make sure the connections are good on the harness before I end up taking parts off again just to gain access.

I also made a chart of the connector behind the brake booster to make things easier for others.

Connecting:
For the most part, wire 1 connects to wire 1,(regardless of the color variation), and so on. It appears that the only reason the connector changed was to accommodate more pins.

While I didn't really have to make this chart, I don't like to connect wires without knowing exactly where they go. This also allows me to test them, before I have an issue.

The 944 turbo harness needs to be trimmed a few inches. This length will vary car to car, as some early cars do not have their connection directly behind the brake booster.

Edit: I updated the diagram and corrected some of the notes below.

Notes:

Early cars also have a black wire on Pin 2 that went to the DME. This does not run to the DME on late cars, but still powers the tach.

Pin 3 has two red/yellow wires, when you trim the late harness you will find both wires.

Pin 11, you will need to install a relay and additional wiring.

Edit: I updated the pics.

Went back and added heat shrink to the connections.

The following charts are for the various gauge connectors found under the dash.

Here is the 14 pin connector again, (C14). You'll need this diagram to make the early gauges work with the late harness.

There are too many changes through the years to make one tidy chart. Basically, all you're trying to do with these charts is match the terminals.

Here's an example of my car.

Tach+ C18-1:
The both the early harness and the 924S harness have two wires for C14-2; red/blue and black. The black wire powers the tach.

A/C C18-3:
Connect C18-3 to C14-13.

Not Used:
C28-6 is for an unused connector in the engine bay. Since the 924S uses the early 944 wiring harness, this connector was originally used on cars that ran Motronic 1.2 with an Auxiliary Air Valve (AAV).

Oil level sensor C28-8:
If you're using a '86 944 turbo engine, you will need to ground the wire connected to C28-8, or your oil light will flash. If you're using a 86 harness with a 87 engine, you can just run your own wire to the oil level sender.

Here is the wiring schematic for the Auxiliary waterpump relay. To install it in any car, all you have to do is run the wiring for the pump and temperature switch into the interior, then tap into your existing wiring from the DME relay and fuse box.

Auxiliary waterpump relay connections.

Terminal #3 connects anywhere in the fuse panel it can receive positive + power even when the vehicle is switched off.

Terminal #4 connects to the yellow wire running from the turbo temp switch.

Note: The temp switch supplies a ground that will run the pump anytime the temperature is too high.

Terminal #7 connects to terminal 87b of the DME relay.

Note: Terminal 87b only gets power when the DME is getting a signal from the reference sensors that the engine is running. This means that the waterpump will only activate once the engine has been shut off.

However, tapping into terminal 87 in the C14 connector above will activate the pump anytime the ignition is switched off, regardless of whether the engine was running or not.

Terminal #2 connects to terminal 85 of the DME relay and the negative pole of the pump motor.

Note: I believe terminal 85 is just an ordinary ground.

Terminal #5 connects to the positive pole of the pump motor.

Man, I'm impressed, you are one organized dude! I planted a mustang 5.0L HO v8 into a jeep wrangler back in the day, the wiring was a nightmare. Methodically, though, comparing the two wiring diagrams, it was pretty logical, after a bit. The Jeep was a gas, no pun intended, hill climbing power, and had such low gearing, that Moab, et al, the jeep was quite fun. Spring over axle, one ton ford axles, lockers front and rear, blah, blah, blah. Now I like speed!

Thanks, I do my best.

Speaking of 4x4's, these belong to my friend. He went out to Moab a few summers ago and had a blast! I help him wrench on them every now and then. They're pretty much stock, aside from skid plates and such. He used to be into jeeps before he got these.

Most of the engine bay shielding is complete.

I used a heat resistant mat that I found online. I then covered the edges with heat resistant tape.

I relocated the harness to make room for brake booster shield.

Most of the sleeves on the harness were crumbling. The boots and plugs weren't much better, so I decided to replace them.

Much Better!
