Hi guys,

For the past 7 months or so I had been driving my 931 around on and off and dealing with the starting issues I've illustrated in another thread (http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=35443&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=). I believe we pinpointed a bad WUR, which I haven't gotten around to replacing because its been winter and I work from home so don't drive too much.

Now that spring is here I wanted to get the 931 out of the garage to make room for my 964. When I went to move the the 931, it started then died right away as it had been doing for a while now. Usually it would then start again and idle relatively normal.

This time, on my second start, I got nothing. No cranking, no noises...just silence. Thought that was strange, but because I had to go back inside for work, I left it for a while. I thought maybe the battery was bad since I hadn't been driving the car much even though I bought a new battery for it last year.

Tried charging the battery by placing the charger clamps on the terminal connectors of the car. Didn't take charge. Thought this confirmed bad battery so I bought a new battery...installed it...got some clicking but still no starting.

In the meantime, put my charger right on the terminals of my old battery and it eventually read a full charge, so thought maybe something is wrong with my connections.

Please bear with me as I am clearly not the most technical : ) Was told maybe there was a bad ground, so I removed the ground connector from the battery and placed a jumper cable between my negative terminal on the battery and the intake manifold and tried to start the car. I got some whirring but still no starting.

Was then told that maybe my flimsy jumper cables weren't going to be strong enough so I connected my jump pack to the same setup and tried to start the car. Just louder whirring : ) Still not starting.

Not sure what to try next or where to look. Could it be a bad ground? Obviously the existing problem seemed to be a bad warm up regulator....would this have something to do with what is going on now?

Thank you for taking the time to read my long post and for any help you can provide!

I assume you've been working the starter quite a bit while trying to diagnose your running problem. My money is on the starter. Also the reason your car starts and then dies is because your cold start injector is blasting in gas when you first try and turn it over, it runs out of that gas and dies. You really need to get your fuel system sorted if you plan on driving it. Not sure if its already been said... but you have to get a CIS pressure tester to properly diagnosis a fuel issue. Alternatively you could just replace ever part in the fuel system. Fuel pump, accumulator, filter, distributor, WUR, injectors, frequency valve... that would fix it to, IF its a fuel system problem that is.

Thanks for the response Nein! I appreciate your patience as I clearly don't know a lot about diagnosing my own problems : )

By "working on the starter" do you just mean giving it a few strong taps? I've been told to knock it a few times to see if that helps. What else should be done to rule out the starter?

I totally understand needing to get someone who knows what they are doing to get in there and do a CIS pressure test. I have no problem spending money on the car, but as it isn't my main vehicle, would rather spend money on parts I KNOW I need. Suppose a CIS test would tell me that.

This from 924.org: To clarify how it works, the CSV shoots a spray of fuel into the intake for a period of time at engine start. If it is working properly, and the cold-start problem lies elsewhere, then the engine will fire right after cranking but not stay running the first few times. However, if the engine does not fire right up when cold, you can suspect a problem with the cold-start valve.

This would lead me to believe that my CSV is working just fine considering when the car was starting it would fire up right away but not stay running the first 2-3 times. That is why I started suspecting the fuel pressure regulator.

Again, thanks for everyone that takes a peek at my posts! I would love to get the 931 back on the road (I love driving it!), just want to make sure Im spending my time/money wisely.

I suspect the starter simply because it may be old and you may have finally worn it out while trying to troubleshoot your fuel issues. If you've replaced the battery and still no luck, I'd say the starter may just be dead. Remove it and bench test. ***Do not try and apply 12V directly to the starter while you are under a car on jackstands. Serious injury or death could result***

As far as testing the CIS system goes, you'll be able to handle it just fine with help from the board.

Get the tester here>>> http://garage.ideola.com/prod-Tools.html

Whirring like the starter was getting power and spinning but nothing engaging?

If so, then I'd recommend getting the starter rebuilt. Mine was doing the same (whirr and nothing). Every two or three tries it would "catch" and start the car.
That obviously isn't you whole problem but it's one more variable eliminated, and you can't go wrong with that new starter feeling.
