Anyone have experience with this? I think mine might be coming apart at the braze between the "chamber" and the pipe going forward.

How to repair? Anyone fabbed an update?

I purchased a completely new(used) one when mine broke, in the exact spot you describe.

Watch out for the sweeping left handers as it will put out a nice smoke screen behind you when it finally lets go..

I have a 'repaired' one in my stash, it has a bolt going thru the middle holding top and bottom together! No idea if it works, I have a NOS one that is pristine for my one last project.

Air/oil separator, integrated into the turbo drain line:

I dunno, perhaps "breather" is a better term?

Fairly common problem with age/vibration/knocks/etc.
Metal is thin and care needs to be taken when brazing with oxy torch.
Easy repair but if not confident in your skills, better to give to a professional (like I did) and it is done in mere minutes.

What's inside the box? Is it just a catch can like the crankcase breather? If so it'll probably be easier to have one made up.

I may be wrong but I think currently my S1 doesn't have one. I think early S1's didn't and it was a later addition. However I do have the additional cylinder head breather with the pipe heading down near the turbo.

The spare engine has one but that pipe was bent. In pulling it straight the joint has cracked a little. However the head doesn't have the breather drilled in.

Whats the best solution to the breather pipe configuration? I can reinstall the perfect solution during the rebuild.

With the head I suppose you can drill where the standard breather update position should be or go the GTS route and have a port on the side of the oil filler neck on the cam cover. The latter route would make it easier to fit a fuel rail in future if you decide to go EFI.

Actually I remember installing an aftermarket crankcase breathing kit specifically designed for the 924 Turbo. I bought it years ago from Turbo Technics but don't know if they still sell them.

It was designed to cure oil smoke at idle that a lot of these cars still suffer from (even after the Porsche factory update).

It basically creates quite a strong vacuum in the crankcase until the car's making boost at which point it breathes positive crankcase pressure to my oil catchcan. Works a treat but was expensive for what it was at the time.

I'll have to dig out the installation sheet and post it up here as it would be worth copying.
